The U.S. government has just introduced its first-ever automated safety tech requirement on future cars, eventually requiring every new car sold in the country to feature a form of automatic emergency braking. The move is a final expansion of a current voluntary agreement that is said to already cover about 90 percent of the auto market (and incentivized by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's top crash safety rating requirements), but now introduces performance safety standards that must be met, via AP News. The new change will come to cars in five years' time, beginning in 2029, giving automakers plenty of time to catch up to the new required regulation.



NHTSA's new requirements outline that all passenger vehicles with a weight of 10,000 pounds or less must now feature a forward collision warning system with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection. These vehicles must be able to stop themselves from hitting a vehicle immediately ahead of them at speeds up to 62 mph, and must automatically apply braking at speeds up to 90 mph if it detects an imminent collision. The pedestrian detection must be able to detect people during the day and night, and stop from speeds of up to 31 and 40 mph depending on conditions.

NHTSA is not outlining any specific equipment requirement, but rather new performance standards that have to be met by any equipment chosen, so cameras and radar are likely to be expected. NHTSA wagers this will increase the cost of new cars slightly, which was put down as $82 per vehicle in 2020 dollars; it's also anticipated to save hundreds of lives and injuries and millions of dollars in property damage.

The U.S. agency will conduct tests on random new cars off the line when the rules go into effect; out of 17 new vehicles so far tested currently, only the 2023 Toyota Corolla equipped with cameras and radar met up with the new requirements.

ugh....my truck has that now...can't move with a door open, can't back up with the gate down (have to turn off the switch) If i back into a weed or brush...brakes on. I haven't tried the forward sensors yet...next time i have a big cardboard box i'll try it.

But, i know once i approached a car at a traffic light a bit too fast and it warned me...i don't know how because theres no camera in front.

I own more than one vehicle with this already. I don't like how it works so I turn that crap off. It brakes way sooner than necessary, and keeps the brakes applied longer than needed. I'm not so much concerned that it will be required equipment. My concern is whether or not we'll still be able to turn this off if we don't want it.

This isn't going to implement well, all it will take is someone sliding over in front of such equipped vehicle a little too close on the freeway and the car will brake to "avoid the collision" ...let the imagination run along the line of dominos, willing to bet this will cause more accidents than it prevents.

Every new generation of people seems to have less common sense than the previous . It’s like they have to take all control from the driver because of no skills , or abilities. . Trying to save stupid folks from running over others ,when they probably shouldn’t even have a license to drive. Is it people who walk into oncoming traffic or the inattentive driver who is worse .
Maybe it will save me from getting run over by some ahole who’s not paying attention. But I know how to look for traffic, both ways ! My next truck might even have points and condenser.

I'm wondering if you're disappointed for the same reason I am. They're totally in the tank for EV's and are actively promoting them as the next greatest thing to save mankind from itself.

I wonder if it will cause more accidents in slick conditions. Granted, people should allow safe distances, but what happens if the system activates hard, combined with a slight steering correction on the part of the driver?

All I see is the potential for someone to spin out and wreak havoc in wet or icy conditions. Especially with any distraction for whatever reason.

Guess they're tired of their paid protesters getting mowed down when they block roads.....

Damn how much longer are the people of this great nation going to allow unlected bureaucratic twits to dictate how and what we drive. What is it going to take for people to wake up and elect some representatives that will stop this crap or is it going to require stronger actons.

Trying to think for people who don't know how to drive or are too easily distracted by cell phones, etc. etc., or are just too stupid to have drivers license. We have them in our 22 3500 and our 23 SRT Durango. They go off a little early in my opinion, especially when I'm already applying the brakes. Our Colorado legislature is now trying to outlaw an enormous number of different firearms in the pointless hope they can reduce the number of illegal activities committed by criminals. I've never been arrested but because I own a number of the firearms, some of which are historically valuable or even collectors items, I am to become a criminal. Remember when new car manuals in the glovebox gave instructions on how to do a valve lash adjustment? Now they warn people who are too stupid not to drink the battery water.

This will be a super feature for the 4x4 herding cattle on the ranch or the farmer driving his fields thru crops or weeds, the hunter busting brush to get to his preferred location, busting thru snowdrifts to get to your destination, etc. etc.

I will feel so much safer with this enhancement......especially while texting and drinkin a beer! Won't need to worry bout that jerk in front of me no more! Thank god for improvements!

Another reason I drive a truck from the 80s! You are the only driver in those.

Ditto. In the 50s the owners manuals told you how to adjust the points. Now they warn you not to drink from the battery.
