Interesting.

A catch can is collecting oil/water vapors and keeping them from being burned off through the throttle body into the infinite atmosphere. Seems to me that would an simple upgrade/mod that would be beneficial thing, let alone better for the engine, jm2¢.

Yep, but routing those "emissions" from the PCV Valve through the intake and back to the combustion chamber is a chance for it to be "cleaned" by the catalytic converter before being released.

It's all about the "clean air".

The catch can gathers those same emissions, and now what? As for me I would collect it all and recycle it along with my used oil during the next OCI, still keeping it out of the atmosphere,

Trouble is, some fools cannot be trusted with a task as simple as keeping their gas tank full. So instead of a catch can, we get a low upkeep or zero upkeep system, and engine issues be d*a*m*n*e*d.

We must learn to obey the idiotic dictates of our dark overlords. It's for our own good.

You can take them on and off very easy, and the cheap ones work as good as the expensive ones.

Just weird to hear a hemi with dirty oil at 500 miles, I's spend some time on it see what I could come with.

OK, so a little back-story. From 07/2017 and 22,000 miles when I bought my 2014, every OCI was handled by the dealer at around 7,000 - 9,000 miles, using whatever bulk oil they had on hand plus a basic Mopar filter.

I was running this as my work commuter doing a minimum 80 miles/day from 2017 to 2023. I felt sick to my stomach when I had a dealer OCI in 10/2023, then checked the dipstick in 12/2023 and found the oil was coal black. Only 528 miles since the "oil change".

That's when I took matters into my own hands, finally, and introduced my own PUP 5w-20 and RP 20-820. I also sent a UOA to Blackstone to test the crud that came out, but the ;ab had little to say as there was only 528 miles on the oil.

Right now the PUP is looking a little cleaner, it's a dark honey but not coal black. I have never run any oil or gas additives other than Top Tier gas. I'm hoping more frequent OCIs with known and better oils and filters will eventually turn things around.

I'm feeling pretty lucky and just a bit gob-smacked that I have not tick, butter-smooth idle, lots of butt-dyno power, and 15.7mpg city, 24mpg highway (3.21 rear, 8 speed). I will continue to use either Mopar AIR filters or Purolator Boss AIR filters as they seem to help keep things clean.

My engine sounds sounds pretty good right now and I'm really looking forward to getting the PBL24651 filter and Red Line 5w-30 oil in it for the summer, and seeing how it runs and sounds.

I want to add a catch-can, looking at Nick's UPR or the Moroso. Big diff in price and both seem to be quality. I like @Wild one saying the radiator mount Moroso makes sense.

I did an oil change on my "2017 off the frame restoration" HEMI RAM yesterday.

I decided to use the Purolator Boss PBL 24651 instead of the Royal Purple 20-820. I've used the Purolator Boss oil filter in the past and there wasn't any issue, plus it's on the shelf at the auto parts store and $12 ...

I have a couple Royal Purple oil filters on hand, but wanted to try the Purolator Boss again.

<edit and added note:> And I'm still using Red Line 5w/30

Thanks, @JHoward .

In June I hope to have enough miles for a somewhat meaningful UOA of the PUP 5w-20 with RP 20-820. I should be right around 3000 miles, which is early for all this synthetic, but the oil is black and black is bad, IMHO. My wife's oil is older and still the color of honey, and honey is good. :Big Laugh:

So, new PCV valve, installed Moroso air/oil separator, new air filter (Mopar) and coming up > Red Line 5w-30 and PBL-24651.

I have just around 100 miles on the catch can so probably too early to have a peek, but my curiosity is eating at me just a bit.

EDITED TO ADD: Earlier this week I added 2 15oz bottles of Red Line SI-1 to the gas tank and topped it off with Sunoco 89 octane TopTier. Butt Dyno can feel and loves the reaction from the skinny pedal already. No science to offer other than the SI-1 was added the same day the Moroso was installed.
