The safety aspect is no longer the issue it use to be. Stellantis is not the only company looking to reduce the use of chrome plating, although I suspect it has more to do with eliminating the cost and sourcing issues associated with the process.

Regardless, any desire for chrome will probably be taken up by the aftermarket.

I used to have a Burgundy car, when the Sun's reflection came off the hood, i would get a headache.
As soon as i saw that Delmonico Red was actually Burgundy, i drove my Factory Ordered Ram to a Body Shop.

There was No Way, that i could drive my Ram for 350 miles a day, 5 days a week, driving into the Morning Sun in the Morning & into the Afternoon Sun in the late Afternoon, would have driven me crazy.
Then having to endure the Ugliness of Burgundy Pearl under the Fluorescent Lights at night in a Mall Parking Lot. It turns Brownish Green, then try to find it, with a lot full of vehicles.

Then to have Chrome Bumpers, which look unfinished after washing them, they have to be wiped off, to look decent.

It just is not my thing

Hey, you'll never find chrome on my truck or Jeep, but man-o-man, nothing looks better than a restored, shiny black Jeep CJ with chrome accessories with side pipes! That's just me, it has its place.

Chrome is great when applied properly. It is more durable than paint, and even on plastic, it doesn't look disgusting like flat black trim does from day one. Eliminating it must be a cost cutting move. Flat black makes the form read poorly and looks terrible, especially on white vehicles and wheels. I don't want Limited levels of chrome, but in moderation chrome is beautiful and durable... a silver, pewter, or bronze coating could be a nice wheel coating substitute as used on a few Challenger wheel options. I love some of the non-black factory wheel colors offered on Challengers.

I guess I'm one of the old farts. I personally think chrome adds some class, especially for bumpers and wheels. I don't like paint colored bumpers because of the durability issues and absolutely despise black wheels. I agree with mtnrider. At least give us a choice.

Well, I am on dirt and gravel roads a lot. I just picked up my 24, 2500 and I got the chrome package because it cleans up way better than paint. In my opinion.
Not to mention the massive amount of bugs that I take off the front end After a couple weeks of driving that are almost glued on.

I doubt the European overlords are doing this to save us, they probably save $6.23 per unit. If they wanted chrome they would sublet chrome plating to Haiti where the environmental and wage standards are more flexible.

But it's OK to build batteries???
Go figure , doesn’t make any sense . I spend 42 years in the steel fabrication business. Nearly 100% of our products were galvanized. Highway safety , guardrail , bridge rail , pedestrian rail etc . Only thing we didn’t galvanize was weathering steel C-10 like the guardrail in some of the national parks . Turns a rusty brown supposedly blends better with the natural environment. To me looks like rusty steel. :) The galvanizing process is not the cleanest thing for the environment.

This is probably kind of a generational thing. I remember when Pontiac introduced the 68 GTO with the enduro painted front bumper. We were all entertained with the guy swinging a piece of pipe at it and it just bounced off with no damage. But after that most of us were kinda of - like that painted bumper just ain’t right. And then in 73 Corvette did the same change to its front bumper and in 74 to the rear. There are still old Corvette guys around of the opinion that no Corvette after 72 is a real Corvette.

Sounds like the same old Corvette guys who try to convince everyone their car is rare because it's one of only 17 built on a Thursday that had the screws holding the passenger side sun visor torqued to 2 in/lbs more than standard.

I wash my vehicles, by driving it to a self serve car wash, that has a high pressure wand & a brush for soaping.
I don't use the soap brush.
The high pressure wand has Soap, Wax, Rinse & move the vehicle out of the way, for the next person.
I get on the Highway to dry it off, 65 MPH dries it quickly

And welding on it isn't the best for your lungs.

I washed mine last night. It rained for about an hour when the temp was about 95°, then the wind blew and dried it off. Got in it this morning and I can actually tell that some of the bug splatters are gone.
