When I see an 18 wheeler hauling a load of new Teslas I start praying it doesn't catch fire lol. We had a pretty bad 18 wheeler fire last week. It was hauling cars of some sort. I am assuming it was hauling Tesla's. No one was hurt, but man it was a charred mess.

Can you imagine the fiery crashes and deaths on the highways if even 25% of all cars and big trucks were electric?

Most major highways would be closed every day from fires that couldn't be put out, not even taking into account the deadly fumes from a fiery city crash or one in a congested residential area.

Some counties in CA are getting pretty close, so you don't have to imagine it. You can just see the results. EV fires are rarer than ICE fires but more of an issue when they occur. Crashes aren't the biggest issue with EVs, charging and thermal runaway due to software issues are the major causes.

I'm curious as to overall fatality numbers in vehicle crashes, though. ICE fires typically start under the hood and occupants have time to get out on their own or get extracted. EV fires start under the passenger compartment, but have mitigation built in to increase time for occupants to get out. Especially as EVs age, I want to see how effective that mitigation is. EVs are heavier, though, and heavier vehicles are safer for the occupants with all else being equal in most types of crashes. Think of a head on, the lighter vehicle decelerates more sharply and is the one that's pushed back, subjecting the occupants to greater forces.

Oh just wait until an 18 wheeler EV with so much more battery goes up in flames.

Look up what lithium metals reaction with water is. And realize every ev. Is basically a bomb. I heard a fireman talking about a ev car fire. He said they pushed the car under water & it was still burning. Wtf. I’ve seen lead acid batteries blowup scary stuff , but it didn’t burst into flames. No ev’s for me thanks. Maybe keep one out back for kindling

And of all places for a fire is California. That place seems to be on fire all the time.

A bomb is what you make as you put more energy into a smaller space. Yet people dream of a miracle sized battery. Maybe they should think realistically.
