I read somewhere on here that with Apple/Android car play you can just run your phone app GPS right on your display instead of spending $150 for the update. I have a 2014 Ram 1500. If so how do I do this?

Couldn't see that thing lasting longer than the 1st NY pot hole, Would that even be legal in some states, with it sticking over the dash / blocking sight , like that?
The newer Explorer Limited has those kinds. We have one and like it real well. However those are factory installed, not Chinese.

Just install in an aftermarket CarPlay/AA-compatible head unit. I had the small LCD screen radio in my previous 2015 2500 and swapped in a Pioneer unit that worked great. Only downside was it was maybe a 6" screen, so not as large as the 8" RA3/RA4.

I agree with the others about the unit you linked…

Do a “wireless CarPlay” search on EBay. Many small adapters will populate. They allow the phone to display its screen without a cord.

Warning… bought one for my 2016 Expedition and it didn’t work. The advertisement said the vehicle had to be 2018, or newer. Well, I made the 2018 USB swap in the truck. CarPlay software was already there just needed the compatible USB. Once installed, CarPlay popped up. However, had to be a physical cord connection.

When I got wind there was a cordless option I wanted to try. Read the “2018 or newer” disclaimer and took a chance. Didn’t work. Just thought I’d throw that out there. Also, there was a list of vehicles it said it worked with. The particular USB module I got from from Ford was for a car on that list.

No. Android Auto didn't start being "normal" until the like 2016 AT ALL, and in FCA cars until 2018. Before 2018 FCA DOES NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO CONNECT CARPLAY/AA. (Unless you swap in an 8.4 2018, or a 5th gen head unit with it like MPGrimm linked.)

Ford might be different, but when you start stacking hacks... you get issues.

I've had an AAWireless in my truck for like 3 years and it's pretty much perfect, other than the truck trying to mount IT as a flashdrive sometimes (IE it tries to just poll media files before the AAWireless can connect, so I have to hit 2 buttons on the screeen.)

Hell, I'd be happy if my UWon'tConnect would just work more than 60% of the time. Stalled screens, stuck on backup camera image, stuck on boot screen, blank/black. "Do an update to the software" - "your software is up to date, no updates available". I've had plenty of UWon'tConnect issues in my truck, company vehicles, co-workers company vehicles. Not a good system, especially being OEM, ESPECIALLY at their price point to replace.

Question for those doing aftermarket head unit swaps - I have the base model edition. If I swap to a Pioneer or some such, do I lose the ability to adjust vehicle parameters that are normally accessed through the head unit (UConnect unit)?

Check out Crutchfield for your one-stop-shop turnkey solutions.
You'll need the iDatalink Maestro module so the new head unit interfaces with the CanBus system of our vehicles.

I'm familiar with Crutchfield. I've purchased from them for probably 30 years. I hadn't seen any info on what loss/retention would occur with dropping the UConnect head unit.

I have an '18 with the 8.4 screen...is there any way I can make the steering wheel button default to Android Auto instead of having to say "Hey Google"?
