Took a look inside my hemi

That piston has the hallmarks of poor or negligent maintenance. I have a engine in my garage with a lot of miles but was serviced decently. The patch is still on the pistons. In the case of my engine, the cam died from plugged oil galleries. Some oils are just better than others.

URGENT! Unresponsive truck after getting gas

I once had the wire from the solenoid to the starter corrode away. The idiot engineer that thought a multi-strand wire was suitable in that application should be re-assigned to the toilet seat design department!

    Head gaskets?

Just wondering .... Has anyone used Felpro head gaskets on their 5.7 Hemi" If so, how are they standing up? They are a much better price point than Mopar gaskets.

3k miles since lifter cam job

I still believe that it is an oil supply issue that is most damaging to the cam. I have a block here in my garage that lost the cam. I have been slowly studying it and the main oil gallery from the pump has a thick almost lubriplate consistency. When I pulled the front main bolt, it would not...

    The unwanted step child car.

I worked on them enough to know that I didn't want one, and certainly do not want to work on them but then again, I do not like European cars to start with. Now that Chrysler is sold out to Stellantis, I just might find myself going over to the dark side. I once had a Ford Ranger and while it...

    bacteria growing in gas tank

Algae in gasoline usually starts in long term storage situations. Typically, we used to find the algae growing in the boundary layer between the gasoline and the water in the tank. But this was in storage tanks.

3k miles since lifter cam job

I cut my filters and also use a drain plug magnet. I still have a lifter problem. I'm debating on what course of action is next ..... Rebuild the engine in my garage OR put a cam and lifters in my existing engine.

Where to get a good pcm

I got one recently from flagship and it seems to be OK. Took a while to ship to Canada and their shipping cost was horrible but other than that I can't say much bad about it. Oh, actually a couple of things.... the Vin from the original vehicle as well as the mileage both are still visible.

    Res 130 to Rbz 430

I'll be willing to bet that it is the solder joint in the radio where the antennae connects. Get it to a good radio repair shop, they can fix it.

    Flight recorders....

Looking for info on who makes a decent data recorder. Something like the old COPILOT or the Launch X431. Something that can capture live data to be played back later on a laptop. My old X431 died. Thanks. Launch has their Crecorder CRP 123 but it isn't much good. It essentially does similar to...

3k miles since lifter cam job

Don't bother wasting money on new manifolds, take your old ones to a decent machine shop and get them resurfaced. I did that about 3 years ago and it solved the problem. It is only a matter of time for new manifolds to warp because the casting has internal stresses. Old manifolds, by virtue of...

    New motor recommendation

Yup! It is cheaper in the long run to pay for a bit of warranty on the early failures than it is to do any re-engineering! That is what it boils down to is money.

    The unwanted step child car.

Used to call it the Chrysler Misfire! I didn't like it then, my opinion hasn't changed. Unfriendly to work on.

    New motor recommendation

If you are going with a cam and lifters, change the oi pump as well. also check the oil galleries for sludge. If it has any buildup of sludge, clean the oil galleries. I've seen a buildup on a couple of engines now. I would not do a cam replacement with the engine in the truck rather out on a...

Got Pink Strawberry Shake for Engine Coolant?

I would go with flushing the trans twice. the initial drain and refill plus one more. The way that I look at it, a few hundred dollars in oil and filters is much more cost effective than a multi thousand transmission tear down. If you win on the flushing, you are clearly money ahead. the...

Got Pink Strawberry Shake for Engine Coolant?

First off, fix the leak. If it was mine, I'd run some powder or liquid dishwasher detergent in the cooling system with just water as a coolant. I would do this a couple of times. I would also flush everything including the heater until the water comes out clean. As for the transmission, I would...

Guniea Pig for Cam and Lifter change EBay 2010 5.7

Grinding their contractors is not unique to chrysler, they all do it. It is part of doing business. It is often that the vendor is the one trying shortcuts that ultimately cause some problems. I've seen that first hand.

Guniea Pig for Cam and Lifter change EBay 2010 5.7

If my info is correct, cams and lifters are made by Melling. The 5.7 is an anomaly as far as life and endurance is concerned, I've ran chrysler engines in various vehicles that went 300,000 plus without issue. I think the engineers dropped the ball on this one.

    Lifters

I pulled my spare engine apart and was surprised that the rods and mains bearings were like new. The Camshaft had a lobe completely wiped off it. If the oil and filter are changed regularly, there will likely not be any bearing damage. Matter of fact, if it wasn't for the "bearing crush" being...

Guniea Pig for Cam and Lifter change EBay 2010 5.7

I agree with you on the inadequate oil supply. I'm still leaning towards some restriction in the oil galleries because why else would this "tick" not show up until the engine get to a higher mileage. I am basing my suspicions on the almost "grease like" material in the oil gallery where one of...

    Avoiding the hemi tick?

I am a "by the book" sort of person. I use Castrol 5W20 ever since I bought the truck. It had 56000 on it when I picked it up from Metro out on Richmond Rd. Ran like a jewel until last summer and it seemed from one tankful to the next, the fuel economy dropped in half. No fault codes, I replace...

    Avoiding the hemi tick?

Every oil change includes a bottle of "Liquid Moly" along with the appropriate amount of Castrol 5W20 per manufacturers recommendations along with a new Mopar Oil filter. It is not that I'm not doing everything right, it is simply that there is a huge design flaw in that engine. The "only" lube...

    Avoiding the hemi tick?

Oh, I'm well aware of that. It is too bad that they didn't incorporate "squirters" in the production engines. I worked on what must have been a "pre-production" version years ago and there DEFINITELY were squirters on that particular engine. And, NO, the bigger versions were not yet available.
