    Salt sucks

+1 on lanolin. It smells like hell until it fully "cures". But given the nature of the product, it creeps really well and seals out moisture and oxygen (need both to rust). The creep being the key. It'll get into places that normal products won't. It's not permanent though. It'll require...

    87 vs 89 octane

Most people aren't aware of what all is taking place during a fuel delivery and the blender effect going on underground. To expand on that, if an underground storage tank (UST) is properly setup and the submerged turbine pump (STP) is properly setup, and if the drop point (fill adapter via...

    87 vs 89 octane

I can tell you factually that almost ALL gas stations run filters until a problem presents. Be that slow-flow, phase separation, water issues, etc. Per-filter costs and service call prices make it not very cost-effective to do regularly scheduled preventative maintenance. I worked in the...

    2016 4x4 Lower Ball joints

I'm going to venture a guess and say that's just going to be the sad reality on that subject. Just about every manufacturer is outsourcing their builds to try and be price competitive. I've always used MOOG for suspension components (for 30+ years) and have not been burned by them. I know...

Dealer said No for transmission fluid change.

+1 on the sprayer. That's how I've done my last several "filled for life" BS transmission services. That same sprayer fits the wife's Avalon and Honda. I cussed and cussed on the first FFL service I did until I asked "Isn't there a better damn way to do this than trying to squeeze a bottle at...

Good to see these posts. Thought I was the only mental patient that spent time identifying rust or future rust points and treating, or just generally cleaning the underside.

    87 vs 89 octane

What has been your MPG experience thus far? I'm in a '18 3.6L 1/2 ton 4x4. Unloaded, highway miles in the most favorable conditions, I can manage 22mpg running 70-75mph. Drop a 10mph +/- head wind and it goes to about 20.5mpg. My last trip out to Colorado and back (2200 miles) overall MPG...

    T-Case output seal

It's not leaving fluid on the ground, nor on the undercarriage, so I'll continue to monitor it. When it degrades enough to be an issue, I'll address it then. Thanks for your commentary.

+1 - plenty of write-ups on doing this yourself. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations and specific service techniques. ZF has been in the business for a LONG time and builds these transmissions for a LOT of vehicles (in different configs). If you ask 10 people, you'll get 10 different...

Failed Oil Filter Housing / Oil Cooler

My pedal has normal "engine not running" feel to it - or better said, engine off, I can get 2 or 3 solid pedal pushes before it goes firm. These trucks do have an electronic vac pump in the vicinity of all the things that get disturbed during cooler surgery. Possible a line is...

    T-Case output seal

Vent seems to be in order. No grooves that I'm able to discern. It's just starting to leak. I *hate* fluid leaks so I'm going to be babysitting this one and see if it starts to progress.

Failed Oil Filter Housing / Oil Cooler

I'm at about the 20k mark since I replaced my cooler with the Dorman unit. All seems to be good with it so far. It's not an awful job to do if you have moderate DIY skills, just take your time.

70k miles on OEM seal and leaking. Is this common on Gen 4?

2023 dodge ram filling gas problems.

I posted on this subject prior (can't remember if it was in this thread or another). Having worked in the fueling industry for MANY years, I'm very familiar with how all of these items interact with each other. The post above regarding the nozzle venturi is accurate. Defeating the insert...

    AGS (grill shutter) question

Hi All. 2018 3.6 - When my AGS motor cycles, it makes a rapid clicking noise. I have noticed it quite a few times when I pull in the garage, shut off the engine, and as I'm stepping out of the truck I hear the rapid "clicking". It's not every single time/cycle, but often enough. It took me...

Coolant Temp at 240F while at hwy speeds

Confused here...you're posted in the V6 Engine section and your info shows you're in a 5.7 hemi? 240 is not a normal temp moving down the road (or really sitting idle either).

    ZF Transmission question - temps

Proper service procedures were followed. The transmission was level.

Does the TMU exist on both variants (845RE & 8HP70)?

    ZF Transmission question - temps

Pan/filter was replaced at 54k miles and I currently set at 65k. Was behaving in this manner prior to trans service. It's temperature swings have stayed the same prior/post trans service. I serviced the trans as a preventative at 54k, not due to any performance related issues.

    ZF Transmission question - temps

I've observed a very repeatable trend and I'm curious if others have. This also may be a design build for this transmission? My fluid runs mid to upper 180s when ambient temps are below 60. As ambient temps increase, my fluid cools to low 170s. Is this an intentional temperature regulation...

    Transmission pan leak??

I concur on the MaxLife. That's what I'm running in mine. That's what I've run in quite a few vehicles in lieu of buying into various OEM fluid scare tactics to buy their re-bottled marked way the hell up fluids. As long as Valvoline confirms they meet "Spec X" on whatever I'm working on, I...

    Transmission pan leak??

Somewhere along the line, Mopar in their infinite wisdom, decided drain plugs didn't need to be a thing any longer. I bought a replacement Mopar pan/filter setup and the new revision being stocked no longer has a drain plug.

    Checking transmission fluid

You ready for the next wave? Government limited speeds in vehicles with remote kill capability? Coming in late '24 or early '25 per most news stories. Feds decided they need to have control over your upper speed via real-time ability to monitor, and if they deem necessary, shut you down or...

    Checking transmission fluid

Not to add on more fluff, but procedure is key when servicing these transmissions. If you're automotive savvy and do a lot of regular, routine maintenance, the ZF procedures will sound similar to other makes/models of vehicles. If this is your first run at servicing a sealed transmission, do...
