Hello everybody,

I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie Quad Cab 4X4 with the 5.7L Hemi V8, currently sitting at 213,000 miles. Over the past week, I’ve been experiencing some persistent and worsening issues, and I’d appreciate any insights from the community.

It all began about a month ago during my morning commute. As I shifted the truck into drive around 5 AM, it immediately stalled. I restarted the engine and continued on, but it would stall each time I came to a stop. After replacing the EGR valve, the problem seemed to clear up. However, about a week ago, the truck started exhibiting low RPM behavior, rough idling with the brakes applied in drive, but not in reverse or park. Previously, in drive, the idle would hover around 600-650 RPM, but now it drops to 500 RPM, causing the truck to shake as if it doesn’t want to run. A quick throttle blip would get it back up to a normal idle around 600 RPM. Fast forward to today: I was driving to work, and the truck stalled again at a stoplight, though it restarted without issue and only did this once. Since then, the idle has become increasingly rough, fluctuating between 500 and 650 RPM, with noticeable shaking when it drops to 500 RPM in any gear, including park.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:
  • Cleaned the throttle body (which had significant carbon buildup)
  • Changed the engine oil
  • Checked all fluids, including the transmission fluid, all of which were at an appropriate level with no concerning findings
  • Replaced the air filter (the air filter had a dime-sized stain from the crankcase breather tube, which seems to be oil)
I’ve also scanned the OBD-II port, but there are no saved error codes or check engine light indicating any specific issues. At this point, I’m unsure where to look next. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Ive had the same issue going on with mine forever. Ive replaced everything. Even a new motor when mine gave up the ghost.I replaced the torque converter at the same time. I'm thinking its the torque converter clutch in the pump housing. Mine acts like the torque converter isn't releasing when coming to a stop or low speeds like turning. I had four stalls today. RPMs drop to just under 500. Trying to ride it out till time for a new tranny. 545rfe 280k miles. Apparently Dodge used a plastic piston.Remaned trannys usually have a bored out cylinder, sleeve and aluminum piston for the TCC. SONEX

Hello,
I have had a very simular issue with my 04' 1500 slt, kinda the same scenario most days. I kept getting the p0404 code and I had changed the egr valve and it started doing the same thing again. So I tracked to a $4.00 BLUE oring type gasket on the EGR tube, that was the issue on mine because no more p0404, no stalls, or any other codes and no more oil on air filter or condensation on oil cap. You might have to change the o2 sensors if its starts to show the p0430 code. I did this about 2 months ago - 4800 miles and no stalls. Hope it helps you to look at that for a repair.

Might not be the same problem as my 2007 Laramie, but I had an intermittent engine shake and stall issue until I finally got a DTC for a bad crankshaft position sensor. Apparently I had been driving around for quite awhile with that problem. I replaced the sensor which took some time, patience and rust penetrating spray. Though it is pretty easy to get to.

The engine is like new again. Runs like she is brand new at 17+ years old.

I took the old sensor apart and it had disintegrated inside. Cheap replacement part. But maybe not your problem.

I have 2004 Laramie 5.7 hemi 4x4. Mileage is 158,000. I’ve been having similar issues for a little over a year now. My truck chugs and shakes while accelerating but never stalls. Then all of a sudden it takes off. Also, sometimes it backfires while chugging. The problem is intermittent for me. I’ve gone to two different ASE mechanics. Have had spark plugs and wires changed, exhaust manifolds removed and machined at certified shop. I head a bad cylinder then also that was addressed. I think #4 or 7 but not sure. The water pump also went out another time and its pulley broke off shredding the serpentine belt so it was replaced. Alternator was tested and was not the best so it was replaced another time along with my old battery. New air filter and oil changes done. It is using oil more than when I first bought it 4 years ago. Have to add about a quart a month. Don’t notice any leaks on driveway. Runs the same regardless of the amount of fuel in it. Very sporadic when this happens and the situation isn’t even the same. I like the truck does very well when running right especially through snow and dirt roads. I’m not anywhere close to being a mechanic. I know just the basic . Problem is I’m tired of spending $500 or more each time just to have the same issue come back . Any thoughts before I get it checked again would be very appreciated. Or I’m thinking of trading it. Just want advice. Thanks
