I've seen this problem all over the internet. It started as an "every once in awhile" problem, slowly getting worse. Then I had motor troubles (hemi-tick), so the truck sat over a year while I lined up a new motor. Now we're all ready to go and the key problem has gotten unbearable, every time I run the truck.
Here's the problem….
At the end of a drive, I shift into park. The display shows the transmission is in Park. When I try to tun the key to off, it stops just shy of the off/release position. You can move the position back to "accessory" or to the start spot, no problem. Basically, you wind up moving the key back and forth, sometimes shifting into/out of gear, anything you can think of, even just sitting and waiting. What you're listening for is an audible "click" which is like the truck finally says, "Oh, you're in park and would like to get out now," and magically the key can then turn to the release position.
As I said before, the problem is all over the net, but no definitive answer on what needs to be replaced to fix it. I replaced the battery in the key fob, hoping for a cheap/easy solve, that didn't fix it. I replaced the electronic ignition switch, still not working. The gear shift is in the center console and I'm starting to think that's where the problem is. Even though the shifter is in park, and the instrument cluster says it's in park, maybe there's a signal that isn't being sent to the ignition that the truck is officially in park so it let's the key release.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm REALLY try to avoid going to the dealership if it's something I can fix myself. I've already poured a bunch of money into getting this truck road-ready for my son and this is driving me crazy!
