I've seen this problem all over the internet. It started as an "every once in awhile" problem, slowly getting worse. Then I had motor troubles (hemi-tick), so the truck sat over a year while I lined up a new motor. Now we're all ready to go and the key problem has gotten unbearable, every time I run the truck.

Here's the problem….

At the end of a drive, I shift into park. The display shows the transmission is in Park. When I try to tun the key to off, it stops just shy of the off/release position. You can move the position back to "accessory" or to the start spot, no problem. Basically, you wind up moving the key back and forth, sometimes shifting into/out of gear, anything you can think of, even just sitting and waiting. What you're listening for is an audible "click" which is like the truck finally says, "Oh, you're in park and would like to get out now," and magically the key can then turn to the release position.

As I said before, the problem is all over the net, but no definitive answer on what needs to be replaced to fix it. I replaced the battery in the key fob, hoping for a cheap/easy solve, that didn't fix it. I replaced the electronic ignition switch, still not working. The gear shift is in the center console and I'm starting to think that's where the problem is. Even though the shifter is in park, and the instrument cluster says it's in park, maybe there's a signal that isn't being sent to the ignition that the truck is officially in park so it let's the key release.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm REALLY try to avoid going to the dealership if it's something I can fix myself. I've already poured a bunch of money into getting this truck road-ready for my son and this is driving me crazy!

Do you have access to a good scanner? Or software?

alfaOBD would be real handy at a time like this. Allows one to see what IS and what ISN'T activating, reduce guesswork.

On the newer Darts, this happens because a microswitch in the console shifter doesn't completely connect the signal to the ignition node. On the darts, the fix is to just cut the 2 wires to that switch and solder the wires together. Is this a console shifter? If so, look for the switch.

IDK if the brake switch would have anything to do with it. They're relatively easy to test. Either backprobe with your multimeter on continuity mode, or remove and test with your hand. Usually when they 'go' you get a traction control/abs/brake light too.

They are known to fail.

I'm hearing a different click around the shifter in the console so I'm wondering if that shifter interlock cable is the culprit. Tearing into the console is probably gettting to the edge of my skills (low), but that'll probably be my next step

Yes, the reason it won't let you go all the way to the key removal position is that either the vehicle doesn't recognize that the transmission is in Park, or there is a problem with the ignition switch interlock mechanism.

Next time it happens, see if the cluster is displaying Park or not. If not, push the shift lever more firmly towards Park. May need to have the shift linkage adjusted (you are hitting the stop in the column before the trans is fully in Park). If the cluster does show Park but key will still not come out, then I'd suspect a problem in the interlock mechanism.

Popping open win module is only a fix if it was the win module, if the issue is behind the module you will be exponentially increasing your problem.

If it gets to it look up motor city mechanic and shifter linkage with your year, I guess 8 speed? He had good video's and can easily get you to shifter linkage.

All great info....thanks! The truck is definitely showing in Park and I believe I've ruled out the WIN. I'm thinking it HAS to be the shifter interlock cable. Gonna have to study up on fixing it. Hard to walk that line between fixing one problem or causing more!
