Hi I recently had the check engine light come on my 2014 Ram 1500 sport truck and put a scan tool on it and it comes back p1404. When I look it up it says it’s an EGR valve issue but I’m having trouble finding much on this, everything seems like it’s hemi or diesel related. Is there an EGR valve on the sport truck? If so any info would be greatly appreciated I’m adept at doing basic mechanical stuff and was hoping this would be in my wheel house

The 4th gen 5.7 does not have a EGR valve. Check the PCV valve for proper operation. Remove the beauty cover from the top of the engine. Remove the intake tube. Look at the passenger side rear of the intake plenum. You should see what looks like a square box with a wing nut on top. Turn the wing nut a half turn and pull it straight up. They can be very hard to remove. Try not to choke when you see the price of a new OEM PCV!

OOPS, i made the correction

Possible Causes

NOTE: The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes.
  • Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve
  • Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Solenoid
  • Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve carbon blockage

Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve recirculates exhaust gas to the engine intake for increased efficiency, lower fuel consumption, and reduced NOx emissions. The valve changes the air's chemical makeup by adding exhaust gas, which dilutes the mixture and lowers combustion temperatures, resulting in less NOx production. The valve has two primary settings: open and closed, depending on the engine's power requirements. EGR valves can also improve combustion efficiency, reduce pumping losses, and decrease diesel knock at idle.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects EGR flow or movement when it is not expected.

How to Fix

Check the 'Possible Causes' listed above. Visually inspect the related wiring harness and connectors. Check for damaged components and look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector pins.

i think that this is a video that covers replacement

You don't have vvt and egr, it is a 2014 hemi so it is vvt.

Lol Okay I’m trying to follow along but now I’m confused, do I have an Egr valve or not? If not what should I be looking for?

You do not have an EGR valve on a 2014 5.7 Hemi engine. The EGR was no longer needed because of the VVT or variable valve timing technology incorporated into the engine. Watch the video that Burla posted the link to get a basic idea how it works.

My only experience with this code was my buddy Russ had the code on a 2015 Laramie. He works at a large naval shipyard and one of the diesel mechanics told him that he should replace the PCV valve and change his oil more often. He admitted that he ran 8k mile oil change intervals on Mobil 1. The diesel mechanic used words not allowed on this forum but essentially told him that his engine was sludgy because of poor oil change maintenance. I’m not trying to start an oil change interval debate as it was one mechanics opinion.

My buddy is not the most mechanically inclined person. I helped him change out the PCV and reset his CEL along with an oil change. Within two weeks time he traded the truck in on a 2021 5th gen. He said the code did not come back prior to trade in.

As far as what you should be looking for? I’d start with the most simple stuff first. Change the PCV and the oil. If the code comes back I’d look into the VVT system as it will get more complicated from there.

Okay guys so I’m going owe a big apology here on not doing my due diligence, I was off on the year and engine slightly. I’m sure this changes things and I’m very sorry for wasting anyones time but I didn’t think it was a hemi which made me pull up the vin.

Here is the year make model package

2013 Dodge/Ram Truck RAM 1500 SLT 2WD 4.7L MFI FFV SOHC 8cyl

Again I apologize for the confusion on my part and not verifying this prior to posting, won’t happen again. Any advice is appreciated not sure what or if this changes anything.
Thanks

Bill

I'm not sure but I don't think those are vvt, so if that is the case you do have egr, and you can replace that.

They aren’t VVT luckily.

EGRs are on the back of the drivers head on the 4.7 against the fire wall. I forget what size bolt they are but they are a T45 torx i believe.
