New technologies in polymers are stronger than steel, look at bottled water in plastic bottles, how they stack full pallets 3 or 4 high, each pallet of bottled water is 5000 lbs if 3 full pallets are stacked on top of the bottom pallet that's 15,000 lbs of weight of that bottom pallet of water holding it up, to me that's amazing !

I helped my son put on a pair of really nice, aluminum and plastic automatic retractable ones on his new Sasquach, obviously before the install.

The foot pad is a plastic polymer. The rest is a black powder coated alloy. Hinge pins and hardware appear to be steel. I keep them coated with Fluid Film.

Water is incompressible. Plus, ever do the old "bed of nails" experiment? You step on a single nail, and you have a nail through your foot. You lay on a BED of nails, and it's actually frighteningly comfortable.
So a PALLET of water actually only puts a few pounds on each bottle. And really you need to look at the weight on the bottom bottle as really just the diameter of the bottle, + a little for the "gap" between bottles.

So technically, yes, the bottom pallet has 15000lbs, but at the same time, each BOTTLE is only holding the weight of the 4 bottles above it, and some cardboard.

The retractable step on my 24 3500 is steel, sturdy, and I use it all the time. Very impressed. Kick it out, kick it in.
