Had my AC thermostat replaced back in April. Just within the last few days my AC started acting up. Any suggestions on what might be the issue? Here is what it is doing.

Setting is on LOW with AC cooling button turned on. It will be blowing nice and cold at the proper speed and out the proper vents. Then it will start to blow warm air that smells like ozone / mustiness. It will do this for several minutes (10 plus) and then start blowing cold again. Or if once it starts blowing warm I turn off the AC Cooling button and let it just run for 5 or 10 minutes and then push the button to cool again and it will blow cold.

Any thoughts?

sounds like it may be icing up the evap, usually in a case of a small refrigeration system as in an automobile it is either low on refrigerant or has a restriction in the metering device will cause this. shutting it down for 10 min is letting the evap de frost.

Yep your evaporator needs to be cleaned, full of junk and it's icing up.

Did the 2009 have a cabin air filter?

At 10 years old, i imagine running without a cabin air filter would result in the evaporator being all kinds of nasty.

Well!!

For your sake, i hope theres an easier way to clean that sucker than having yo take it out.

That job looks funner than stompin baby chickens!! :(

do you have a set of gauges, that is the best way to see what is going on in the system. from what it looks like, my 2016 uses R1234YF. retired after 38 years as a commercial refrigeration tech, have never herd of this gas.

Thanks all. I do not have the tools to test the system and if I have to take the evap out then its a trip back to dealer to look at. Maybe it is the thermo again and will be under warranty if not then cross my fingers that it is not a big project.

one simple test you can do is when it is doing as you described again to open the hood and see if the compressor clutch is engaged and then feel the suction line ( that is the bigger of the two) if the evap is iced the suction line will be very cold due to no air passing thru the evap.

Hi Hogfish823,

Please be sure to keep us updated on your dealer's findings. If our team can be of any additional assistance while your truck is in service, we'd be happy to help. We are just a PM away.

I know I'm way late but did you ever find out the cause of the issue?
