Big Block GMs were notorius for pumping the oil pan dry if you ran them over 7,000 rpm,been there/done that more then once or twice,lol.
Small blocks would do the same thing,if you ran the big blocks oil pump and ran them over 7,000 on the stock oil pan,also been there / done that to,lol.
I had more issues with the Muncie 4 speeds behind my 302,as they'd take out first with a 7500 rpm clutch drop on slicks.I blew up a couple of the rock crusher Muncie's,as i subscribed to the "no lift shift theory" and still do,lol. After a couple 4 speed swaps i then converted the car to a T-400
I never had any issues blowing up everything i owned as a kid,everything had 2 positions to the gas pedal,idle and wide open,there was no in between,lol
