I got T-Boned in the front side, Truck is going to be called "totaled" because of bent frame. (not my fault)

I just had this same thing happen in 2019 to my 2007 and my current 2017 was a complete GEM.
I also just did brakes and shocks

I guess my first question is simple:

What YEAR should I now be looking to buy "used"... What year should I avoid?

I want a good quad cab type 1500 with 6' bed...

2019 and 2025 are the "big refresh" years, other than that it doesn't matter what year you buy.

If you like the 4th gen platform, find a newer 'classic'. Pretty sure you can get them as new as 2024 still. More limited on trim options, but they're still good.

How bad is the rest of your truck? Frames can be swapped or (sometimes) straightened. But yeah, that's a lot of work. I was going to say 2019+ as well.

Glad you weren't hurt.

I'm mostly happy with my 2020 1500 classic. It's a crew cab with the 6'4" bed. My only real compaint so far has been the AC. Part of that was my own fault, I went a couple months without it trying to troubleshoot it. Waiting on special adapters so I could read the R1234 pressures since they changed them to not be the same as R134 in an attempt to prevent people from adding 134 to a 1234 system. Waiting on a pig tail to troubleshoot the clutch, etc. all to discover a missing fuse.

Now after working for a coupe months, it's not working again because it's blowing fuses for the compressor clutch...quite possibly why the fuse was missing in the first place.

Otherwise I like the looks, really like the 8HP trans, it's comfortable ride, etc.

This config might not be all that available in the used market, if your desire is a 6.4' bed you might want to be open to include the CrewCab w/6.4' also. The wheelbase will be about 10" longer over the QuadCab.
If you find a Gen5 truck, make note that the CrewCab adds 4" to the vehicle length regardless of the bed length.

I never buy the first year of a completely new generation or engine. I even had a dang 4Runner lemon because of that. The engine was a carryover in 2010 as well. WTF

To the OP, that sucks bro.

I swore I wouldn't either, but here I am, in a first year "new gen" truck.

Funny enough its the "basics" like rear window not sealing, driveshaft clunking, broken manifolds that has given me trouble, the actual "new" stuff on my truck has been problem free

That's good. I knew about the 3rd brake light leaking but have not had any window leaks. The slider just stopped working but I think it's a track problem, not the motor. The 5th gen trucks are growing on me but I'm trying to keep my truck for 10 more years since I have the lifetime warranty and it only has 75k miles.

That sucks, sorry for your loss. I had something similar happen in my 2018 laramie, perfect condition, low mileage and a new driver kid pulled right into my front pass wheel/bumper and tweaked the frame. They totaled the cost due to frame labor.

You prob have a few options as you should be getting a check from the insurance company.

1.) Use any left over money to get into a new truck. all the pre 2020 trucks are going to have lots of miles on them and hopefully used car prices have declined. New I would try not to get something with the Etorque or the new I6. That leaves you in a 2019-2022 1500, all 2500s and up.
2.) You can buy the truck from the insurance company under a different title. Then fix the truck with left over money. The issue is that the truck value dumps as I think you can only register as a salvaged title. I'm not sure what the process is for doing this but its likely the hardest part. Replacing the frame is alot of work... depending on the damage it might be salvageable. You would have to drive that truck into the ground as no one wants to buy a salvage titled vehicle and its not gona be worth anything if something happens to it again.
3.) Change paths completely and get a different brand truck or car, or older truck from any brand.

I started my full size Ram with a 2016 Crew cab with a 6'4" bed. Really liked it, but was getting ready to retire, so bought a new 2020 same configuration.
I LOVED that truck. I took had my frame bent when hit in the front. It didn't even set off the air bags. But insurance totalled it. Now I'm in a 2015 with crew cab and 6'4" bed. I like it, but it's not as comfortable as the 202 and does not get the same mileage. All three trucks were 5.7l with the same rear ends.
If I had the money I would again go for a Gen5.

most quad cabs I see in part of the world seem to have the longer 6.4 box, my last 3 where that way.
Son in law just sold his 2012 and bought a good used 5th gen, its crew with a small box with ram boxes, I really not sure what I think about then, handy for tools , but box is so small, not that I really need much these days.

He really likes this one, old one was getting tired and he was worried about the transmission.

I'm pretty happy with my 2018 1500 Sport/Night. 2018's are a bad year for UConnect screens delaminating, though. Mine just started, and I'm ticked off at how dangerous it is to drive like that. I forgot that I need to disconnect my phone from the truck. It decides to call recent phone numbers on my phone when I'm trying to deal with traffic.

I need the 8' box and I want to seat at least 4. Crewcab 2500 with the 6.4 works great for that. If they made the 1500 like that I would probably own that instead, but I do like the 6.4 better than the 5.7.

Haven't heard much about the mild hybrid on the V6, but it isn't really a plus. At those miles, and the price, it could be a winner.

Mild hybrid = Etorque.
