So as you see at -30c a 5w40 would be near 18,000 viscosity, but at the same temp a 5w30 weight would be near 6,000 viscosity. A simple weight change and at that temp the heavier oil is 3 times as thick.

Funny we hardly talked about this until this year. Cold is a real challenge in picking a good oil for our hemis.
You would think a thicker oil would fill the piston/cylinder wall better to help with slap......unless the oil drains off.....then it would take longer to pump back up to that area in cold temps.....so I can see how a thicker oil would help after engine is at normal operating temp but would be worse at startup.

So 5,000 viscosity isn't thick? It's cold piston slap, so depending on what temperature we are talking about the "thin" oil is thicker than anything we can imagine. 5w20 is 5,000 / 9 or 555 times thicker at a given cold temp around -20/-30f then it is at operating temp. People think 0w20 is thin, it isn't even that thin at operating temp when compared to 5w20, but when it is cold the stuff is very very thick. I posted charts, can't do much more on the subject.

But I will say this, if you get cold piston slap it is worth it to try a couple different weights to see what fixes it. I'd say going even thicker then 5,000 viscosity wouldn't be what I'd do, but trying different things is worth it, especially for the guys at below -20f. As the charts show, at -20f and below is when **** gets real. Even 10 or 20 degrees warmer the viscosities are very manageable. 20w50 at 32f is more then 100 times thinner than 0w20 at -20f. 140 gear oil at 32f is over 100 times thinner then 0w20 at -20f. At -20f there is no such thing as thin oil, it's all thick thick thick.

I gotcha.....should have observed charts you posted earlier.......but as I also said on normal operating temps the thick(heavier weight) oil would apply in a piston slap scenario if the oil is draining off cylinder walls & piston skirts where gravity is going to prevail.
Would need block/pan heaters to get around not using the thinner weight oils.

Glad I don't have to deal with those cold temps.....LoL

Not real impressed with my local napa stores. Online both said they had lubeguard in stock ready to pick up. Stopped at both of them and not only did they not have it but neither store had even heard of it. Ugh.

I was at O'Reilly last weekend. I checked out of curiosity. They had three Lubegard transmission additives and zero oil additives. Makes no sense at all. I have seven or eight auto parts stores in my area, and none of them carry it in stock.

Summit Racing has gallon jugs of Redline 5w20 and 5w30 for $38.53 and if you use paypal you get another $5.00 off.

Also their Royal Purple filters are $12.99 a piece.

Also spend over $100 and get free shipping.

Free shipping? I don’t have to worry about that. I just drive 3 miles and walk into Summit Racing. [emoji41]

I know the voices in my head aren’t real, but man, do they ever come up with some great ideas.

Thanks brad_12 for the heads up on Redline oil at Summit Racing.
Bought 8 gallons for 288.24 with 20.00 coupon, around 9.00 bucks a quart.
Also offered 12 months to pay it off with PayPal.
What a deal!!!

The $5 off if you use Paypal is if you sign up for "Paypal credit" and use it to buy the oil apparently. If I had know that I would have bought it outright to begin with. Still a great deal though and I'm still adjusting to the concept of paying sales tax online though which sucks.
