Okay, so I have 2019 Ram 2500 Cummins 6.7. I’ve been changing oil and using Rotella T6 15w-40. Currently have 110,000 miles and been using this oil for the last 80,000 miles. I’ve noticed my engine having the idle tick and sounding rougher when driving. Did some digging and realized I’ve been using the wrong oil this entire time. I’m changing to recommended but have I already done the damage? Will it help fix the deposits on the valve lash I read about? I’m due for next oil change now and want to make sure.

At this stage all you can probably do is start running a 5W40 oil, and have the current oil tested.
Truthfully most of the grief running a 15W-40 in the +'19 Cummins probably is cold weather related but that's just a speculation. It's possible the "thicker" oil doesn't move fast enough or enough volume causing the problem with hydraulic lifters overtime.

When the noise increases and you start getting a misfire code, then you know it's time to park it and get the valve train inspected.

Thank you for the responses. I’m going to run the 5W40 for a while and just see what happens.

Do you use any oil supplements like Lucas oil additive That would probably take your tick away because it coats the internals of the engine for cold starts. Just my point of view. I use full Synethic 5w40 Rotella in mine.

You are in Arkansas, it doesn't get real cold there so the 15w40 will have been fine even on start up. You likely have not done any permanneent damage. Just switch to a good, high detergent diesel oil like Esso Delvac or Rottella of the proper viscosity and I bet everything will be fine.

well I have 600,000 miles on my engine with no major problems with my engine so your toilet full of money has helped me. Where I have seen others not even make it to 400,000. Anyhow it is only money can't take it with me.
You would have the same results by NOT using any additive as well.

I like the added coating. You do what works for you. I have owned an operated 3 semis in a period of 35 years always used Lucas in them never had engine problems with any of them.
So it must of been just plan luck that I saw many semis that saw 400,000+ miles ( including the one I drove) using plain old 15w40 Delo 400, all without any problems and this was back in the mid 1980's that saw 10K some times a bit longer OCI's?

The later generation 6.7 Cummins uses hydraulic lifters, and the oil requirements are different than the older models with solid lifters. I believe the 15W40 Shell Rotella is called T4 and the 5W40 is the synthetic T6. I am sure your 2019 has suffered some cam and lifter wear from running the T4 is why the lifter noise and possibly why it doesn't run as smooth as it used to.

Excessive wear and/or bent push rod or other valvetrain issue such as broken valvespring will give a misfire code on a 6.7 Cummins, and most any other modern engine. But yes, thus us the 6.7 Cummins section.

I have used Lucas in all my engines gas and diesel ! owned a few big trucks used it in them never had any issues ! my gas engines i use it in them ! My son is a musician knows nothing about cars i used lucas in his car every oil change ! when i was turning wrenches he said my lil red light is on ( you know the genie lamp one ) i asked how long it was on for he told me about 4 days lol checked oil it was empty ! figured it was pooched so drove it to work pulled plug and filter got maybe a 1/4 liter out of it ! put filter on it added 3.5 liters of oil and 1/2 liter of lucas in ! no smoke no noise engine ran great for another 2 years before someone hit him and totaled car! Btw car had over 400,000 KM on odometer when totaled
I will alway used Lucas for just that reason!

I have a '97 Ram 1500 that has over 300k miles on it and NEVER used any additives and also used plain old orange Fram filters.
I also had a 2000 Saturn that had over 330k miles when I got rid of it, same thing on the oil and filters.
Goes to show you don't need any additives. People just use them because they BELIEVE it helps with something. They don't know what but just in case. o_O

I had a 2001 Saturn SL that had 270k on it when I got rid of it. Great little car.
