Hello,

I recently replaced all the speakers in my 9 speaker Alpine system and after doing so, there is some low RPM drone that is new. So, I bypassed the ANC with a cable and all is good again; however on long highway trips, there is a bit more noise in the cabin...acceptable for daily driving, but for longer drives I'd like to get the cabin back to its previous quite state when cruising with NO radio/music, etc.

So, I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to install a switch on the dash to turn on/off the ANC? for when I don't have the radio going and just want a quite cabin?

Thanks for any help.

Wouldn’t the issue be the bypass cable? To disable the bypass cable you’d have to have both a straight through cable and the bypass cable installed. Not sure how you would do that. If you could find a way you’d need some sort of switch that activated the one cable at the same time disabling the other cable or two separate switches to disable one and activate the other. I don’t think there is any way to turn off the ANC function in the factory wiring.

That is not how the ANC works. The reason you disable it when you replaced your speakers is because the new speakers actually magnify the sound at the frequencies being produced by the head unit through the ANC to counteract cabin noise. It does this all the time whether you're using the radio or not. That's why you have to eliminate it. When you upgrade the speakers. By switching it back on, you're going to get that annoying cabin noise once again, that constant drone rather you using the radio or not. If it really bothers you that bad, turn your stereo on at a very very low volume and you won't hear your natural cabin noise. It's not that loud anyway and it's not that bothersome.

Thanks for this.explanation, makes sense. If I have this rignt, the new speakers will magnify the cabin noise regardless if music is playing or not.

Yes, playing the radio at lower volume is a good solution its what I've been doing even if I don't want it on, seems.like a sweet spot.

I've sound deadened the doors, perhaps doing the floorboards and back panel will help offset the low rpm drone while driving long trips on the highway?

Or a quieter muffler tunes for the low RPM drone?

Great explanation from CanadianKodiak. I have a 4th gen so no ANC. When I upgraded my speakers on the basic 6 speaker system I also did door sound deadening mat. That helped with noise level and the extra material I had left over I used on the back wall of the cab. I think that made the biggest difference in road noise for me. It’s a PITA to pull the rear seats and remove the carpet panel but the rear of the cab is just sheet metal that amplifies noise. You can’t cover the whole area with continuous sheets of mat as the carpet cover won’t go back on correctly. Just filling in open sections back there made a noticeable difference.
