Hey all (tried searching for this topic but couldn’t find it specifically).

A few weeks ago I bought a brand new 2024 1500 Classic Warlock. Love it!…

But the backup camera resolution is absolutely horrible - it has the 8” screen with UConnect 5. It’s worse than the 2015 camera in my son’s Mustang.

I brought it back to service and they said that that is the norm for the classics - that they upgraded everything but the actual camera lens.

Can someone confirm this?

Thanks

My 2500 is similar to the 1500 classic and I have the 8" screen. My camera is crystal clear. Can't see why the 1500 wouldn't be too. I would get them to show you a few other classics on the lot and judge for yourself.

Dealerships are infamous for saying, oh that is within spec, when it isn't even close. If they are pulling that on something this minor, find another dealership for the longer term.

Compared to other brands cameras, most stellantis cameras are low res. The screen is capable of a higher resolution than the camera outputs. I've toyed with the idea of buying a Dodge hornet camera to see if it will work on my Ram and Pacifica (which also has poor resolution)...

Yeah, the screen is great, but as soon as the reverse camera comes on, it looks like 240p.

seems fishy

The back up camera on my 2023 Classic gives excellent clarity

I have a new Rebel 2500, and the backup/cargo/front/side cameras are all pretty bad quality. Much worse than the backup camera on my '16 Rebel I traded in. However, the digital rearview camera is crystal clear. Does anyone know what is going on? I noticed it was bad, but it struck home when I got a loaner 23 Lonestar 1500 Ram, and the backup camera was really nice. Kinda upset....got all this technology but cameras from 2001.

I'm interested to see the part number on your truck since it's a 5thGen HD but has a lot of 4th Gen from the cab on back. I'd also be interested if you could post a picture of your camera in the tailgate handle and the on-screen image when in reverse. To answer your question, the cameras used in these trucks have a much lower image quality than what the radios can display. To be clear, what do you mean by "the digital backup camera is crystal clear" on your truck? As clear as the 23 lonestar backup camera?

Digital rearview mirror.....the rearview mirror is a screen itself. It's an option.

Maybe so, but why wouldn't the main screen be maxed out also? It's totally capable of presenting a high resolution picture.
The image is crisper on the smaller screen because it's resolution is lower than or equal to than the image resolution of the camera itself. The radio (with a much higher resolution) is displaying a relatively low resolution image from the camera in a full screen mode making the image appear blurry (because it's a lower resolution than the screen it's displayed on). In other words, the camera resolution is the weak link and not the radio resolution.

What I'm trying to find is a CDJR vehicle with a higher resolution camera than the Ram Classic that will fit into the same tailgate camera housing as our trucks. My Pacifica with a 10" screen has the same problem but I had a Dodge Hornet as a loaner that had the clearest backup camera image I have ever seen.

I have a 2021 Bighorn with the 8 inch, screen my BU camera image is crystal clear. I would check to see if there is damage/dirt on the camera lens.
