Metal in pan remaned engine

Hey I have a 2104 ram 5.7 just put a remanufactured engine in and did the first oil change at 500 miles and there is a significant amount of silver in it. Should I be worried?

May be a good idea to have Blackstone test your oil ?

First oil change could be leftover remnants from doing a poor job keeping things clean during rebuild. I would probly refill and run a few hundred miles and if it's still bad then go with @Slinge and have an analysis done.

I dont think I'd panic. The filter should catch all the big stuff. Whatever damage is gonna be done is probably already done. I'd probably do a short interval change and if it still has good oil pressure and normal crankcase pressure I'd just run it.

Thanks I'm going to run another 500 and di another oil change and just hope for the best. But it does seem to have some valve clatter with slight revving.

The oil pressure goes down to 27psi at low idle. Is that normal? The engine before was around 38psi at idle.

I've never seen that on any engine that was still in good shape, if that is metal.

Cam, lifters, ect....

Being 11psi low on oil pressure from before would be enough to have me look back inside at all the bearings.

I've never seen that much metal in any new or rebuilt engine.

If I saw that metal on break-in I would be contacting the company who rebuilt it . Something is seriously wrong with it.

What Will the Remanufacturer Do?

If this engine should fail due to a defect in materials or workmanship on their part, the remanufacturer will, at their discretion, either replace the engine, or supply parts necessary to make the repairs. Only those parts furnished by the remanufacturer will be replaced or repaired. Any refund on this engine must be approved by Advance Auto Parts. NO REFUNDS WILL BE APPROVED AFTER 90 DAYS. After the initial 90-day period, the warranty covers replacement or repairs only. Refunds after that time period will be limited to core value only. In order to qualify for labor reimbursement, a licensed, "tax-exempt" garage or repair facility must originally install the engine. Engines installed by individuals or non-licensed garages will be considered "self-installed" and paid at a lower rate. For garage installed engines only, if approved, the remanufacturer will authorize labor to be paid at the "Warranty Rate" of $50.00 per hour, "Mitchell Flat Rate Time" with a maximum payment amount of $500.00 per claim. Repairs that do not correct the problem will not be reimbursed. For "self-installed" engines, the rate will be $25.00 per hour "flat rate", with a maximum of $250.00. Claims will be approved only after the examination of the returned part or parts. The decision of the manufacturer will be final. An engine will only be replaced one time. If the second engine should fail during the warranty period, it must be returned to the store where you will receive core credit only. At that time, it will be shipped, at our expense, to the remanufacturer for a failure analysis. If a factory defect is found, the engine will be replaced and labor approved. If not, then you can have the engine returned at your expense.

That's what I'd do. Being down on oil pressure with metal in the pan is concerning. Could be that they just didn't clean it well or it could be ready to spin a main bearing.

Try to get your money back and see about a getting an engine out of a wrecked truck or something. I've never heard of a good experience with any parts store reman engine or transmission.

And man, those disclaimers in the warranty statement, oof.

After reading that, I'd be looking to trade in the truck while it's still running ok.

Yeah but I git the reman for 3200 with 3year 100k warranty a used one in my area is around the same price with maybe a 90day warranty if lucky

By the look of that warrenty,i'd say you're better off with a wreckers 90 day warrenty. That warrenty is hardly worth the price of the paper it's wrote on in my opinion.

Glittery metal in the oil pan would be bearing failure, (mains, rods, Cam) that is why lower oil pressure, probably a main, get a used engine your odds are better that remanufacture.
$3,200 if you bought all the OEM parts for a rebuild it would of cost you more.

The metal in the pan and the drop in oil pressure really point towards bearing issues. I would contact them and not wait for another 500 miles.
