I removed the rest of the rod bearings. Was only the one that was in really rough shape. rest are okay, couple are on the questionable side and a few are just peachy.
I'm going to see if the crank is salvageable. Have it ground and straightened and put new over sized bearings in. First I have to get my hands on a engine hoist and stand. Pulling the motor shouldn't be too bad seeing how much room is in the engine bay. I have the money, time eh depends on a new...
Mine seems to be making the same noise you're describing. I just replaced all my lifters and it's still making it. Does it sound like this?
1998 Dodge Ram Knocking Noise - YouTube
Okay, I took a video that shows the noise it is making. Better than the previous video I posted. This is after new lifters are installed. Still making the same noise it did before. Sounds like a diesel. Read the description of the video and you'll see I also checked the oil pan for metal...
Still have that rattling noise. Decided to pull the oil pan off to inspect things. Found no metal shavings in the pan. Sump pump filter is clean. Oil pressure when warm idling is 35-40psi. Push rods and rocker arms seemed fine upon inspection. Valves maybe?
It runs again! I have only ran it for about 10 minutes, has some lifter noise but I know it takes a little while for the lifters to pump up. Gave myself a good scare on a test drive though. Was coming back around my block and gave it a little more throttle then popped and died. Wouldn't start...
The rest of my parts come in today. Will be posting more photos of the project.
Sorry John, I thought I had read power steering pump in your post. Water pump would be a good think to check as well.
As far as the thermostat goes, it will be fine. I've done this several times before on half a...
No need for the cat/o2 or power steering pump to be replaced, all are just fine. Truck has 99k on it, I'd be more concerned about cap and rotor, plugs, wires, etc. Runs fine besides the collapsed lifter. Also, a 15 degree difference in thermostats won't cause much of a difference. Not likely to...
Just got my new lifters today. Here they are installed. I know they are not positioned correctly. I just put them in and took a picture quick. Hopefully, I will receive my intake plenum stuff tomorrow.
I would start with replacing the plenum gasket. That could be the cause of your codes. I'm in the process of doing mine. Highly recommend the updated plenum fix from Hughes.
Well I've decided to attempt to fix my lifter ticking noise and in the process I'm updating the plenum gasket. So far I have removed the valve covers and intake manifold. My plenum gasket seemed okay, I did notice a bit of oil in the intake runners. I pulled the lifters that seemed to be ticking...
Okay, I have the intake and valve cover off. I removed the rocker arms and push rods. Now I'm running into an issues of pulling the lifters out. It seems to be hitting against the head gasket. The lifter nearly comes all the way out but then hits the gasket. I sure hope I don't need to remove...
I've youtubed some videos of dodges with bad lifters. Sounds identical to mine. Now quick question. These magnum motors use roller lifters or the standard flat top style?
Well all I did was cut the muffler out right now. So it is dumped currently. ran out of time today, will just put a pipe in replace of the muffler. Was too quite for my taste, but like you, it will be a daily. I really don't need it much louder, that just attracts unwanted attention :P
As far...
My best guess would be rattling. It's not a consistent ticking noise. It's only when I rev the motor slightly and only at certain rpm range. Seems to rattle around 1500-2500 range. But like I mentioned, when driving under load it does not do it.
I'll take a video of it tomorrow and post it...
