Hi,

What octane fuel do you guys use? I just got a 2010 Ram 2500 and I am trying to see what octane fuel people use.

I just wanted to make sure I am not going to wreck the truck by loading fuel grade I am not supposed to. I don't have the owner's manual for it and Google says the recommended fuel octane is 93. Don't want to dump all my faith on Google :)

recommended fuel octane is 93.

I have run:

unleaded 87 octane
E15 (88 octane)
unleaded 89 octane
and for the controversy slot -- E30 (94 octane)

Granted I don't watch my fuel economy that closely but in terms of how it feels I've never noticed a difference.

You can run whatever gas is cheapest which is usually 87 octane and you or the truck will not know the difference.

Mine is a 2011 2500 2WD 5.7 Hemi with 3.73 axle ratio. I try to purchase the mid grade 89 octane but when I am in the mountains or hauling a bunch of weight I fuel up with the 91 or 93 octane.

I've made it a point to try and run 89 NON ethanol in mine. Doesn't always get that but 90% of the time it does. Seems to have kept the engine happy over the last 95k miles.

There is a counterintuitive thing that at altitude you can actually run lower octane. Something to do with the density of the air IIRC. I remember being in Colorado or Wyoming years ago and they had 85 and I asked the gas station guy about it. Seems totally backwards but I'm no physicist :)

Vehicles with high compression are more apt to have pre-detonation. This is especially the case in forced induction performance vehicles. At altitude where you are getting even LESS air and LOWER overall compression, I'm not saying you should run a lower octane, but I certainly wouldn't go higher.

With altitude comes hill/mountain climes, which the added load is more likely to cause pre-detonation. To my previous point though, this would be more so at the bottom of the mountain where you still have good air. By the time you get to the top, the high load and thin air would likely cancel each other out.
