Many of us are stuck in the old tradition of changing oil frequently, because we grew up with crummy oil. Oil analysis has shown that quality oil especially synthetic can go much longer than people expect. But it does not hurt anything to stick to the old ways.

Owners manual for Gen 5 diesels says 15k miles. I change at 10k miles and feel really good about it.

image.jpgIMG_4019.jpegMy 5.7 has 35k and since new 3k oil but the puny filters that fit,and I’ve tried bigger. More than 3k on this? The 4 cyl Audi has twice the capacity. 3 k for me since even though I have lifts swapping oil filters between changes is out with the location of the ram filter.

The only time i've ever been called Richard is when i've been in trouble, usually it's the wife calling me that :Big Laugh: :Big Laugh: :Big Laugh:
Oh I get it. The better half calls me Richard on a regular basis - my first name is Mike. ...and I'll confess that I normally deserve it.

Please don't flame me, I must have a unicorn truck then, oil changes according to oci.

191.6 k miles as I write this, 163k of that is me.

Using PP 5w-30 and Fram FE2 filter.

Used PP 5w-30 and Fram XG2 filter last 5 or so changes, have used Lubegard biotek a few times several changes ago. Before that PP 5w-20 and Fram XG10060 filter.

2015 SLT QC 5.7L 2WD 8SPD 3.21, bone stock.
Additionally, I have relatively low idle hours on my Ram (at least I think they are relatively low.....lol).20240719_163737.jpg

Well.....if a nurse says change your oil at 5k..change ur oil at 5k.....lol
I change mine in the 5-6k area...Mobil 1,some lubeguard stuff and a fram xg2 filter I think it is...
Whatever burlas chart that one time said was a tick better than the RP by whoever did tests on a bunch of brands..and their not expensive so that's what I run with.
i run the PH2 filter on mine, same as what is recommended for the wifes grocery getter, and almost twice the size of what is recommended for the truck

I don't understand why anyone would flame you for doing what your owners manual requires. Can't find any fault there...

i think it depends on a few different factors (and where you work is not one of them, but how far away from your work you live, is)

i can tell you this, your truck should have a build in algorythem that decides when to turn the "change oil" notification on

during the summer, when my truck mostly pulls family duty the interval is way longer then in the winter, when i plow with it
No algorithm. It looks at miles since change. No adjustment for duty or anything. Just "how many miles has it run." You can look on AlfaOBD, when you pull the system status info. Mine is "locked" at 12600H since change, but the kilometers upticks with every mile I drive. (Yes, it measures in KM, even when set to miles.)

What do you think of the automatic oil change notification system on the 2021 Ram 1500 Classic. I did my first change at around 9K with full synthetic and it should be alerting me soon at 18K. My friend, who is a nurse, insists on 5K. I am a Master Electrician.
Thanks
VP
Started changing my own oil around 60k, did it when the Firestone synthetic was about 5k, with whatever random a$$ filter they use (it's a 10-48 but I don't remember it being anything special, other than "Black".)

Oil came out black as night. Replaced with Pennzoil 5W-20 Platinum, and an STP extended 10-48 (Autozone had a special, and I mis-read the oil) After another 5K is was the color of Ice Tea. Now running UltraPlat 5W-20, and a Royal Purple 20-820, and after 10k, it's ice tea color. My 2018 has the "monitor", but it literally is JUST "how many miles", nothing else. No "engine has idled for x time", or "Oh, you ran it harder than usual...", just "The wheels have rotated x times."

My truck has like 126 idle hours with 12600H on the engine total I think. So I've kept the idle hours pretty low, as much as my wife tries to get me to idle the engine a lot more for "AC" or "heat" for the infant/toddler. (She'd have me leave the engine running for hours at a time if I would let her, where I will remote start on the way through the parking lot, or maybe leave the windows cracked a little.)

There should be, but there is no "algorithm" on my 2014. After 9,000 miles of highway it called for an oil change.

For all the good the "counter" does I might as well duct-tape an
egg timer to the dashboard. :Big Laugh:

After 4000 miles of city driving it showed 63% remaining.
I'll stick with 5k mile OCI.
