I have a 2021 Dodge Ram 1500 Bighorn Lonestar and the mgu unit failed and the dealership tells me that they do not have any idea when the can get the part. My truck has been parked in the back lot at the dealership now for 42 days. They tell me that there are 3500 of theses parts on backorder. Any suggestions?

Is the truck still under factory 8/80 warranty?

Sad to say e torque is about the worst thing that ever came to any vehicle, it is what it is. Never buy another one, zero help to you now, sell that crap soon as they fix it. The issue over and over is eventhough there is a warranty they simply cannot fix it, lol. Insane.

Much of the time it is a downstream issue, the dealers are just this dumb.

Causes of MGU Failure:
  • Defective batteries:
Some Ram 1500s may have been equipped with faulty 48-volt batteries, leading to power and charging issues.

  • Software glitches:
The eTorque system relies on software, and improper calibration can cause inconsistencies.

  • MGU flex cable issue:
In some cases, the flex cable within the MGU is not properly latched, causing a failure in charging and potentially setting off codes.

Actually look up the class action lawsuits, apparently there are a few different ones, lol. Sad state of affairs, apparently FCA new about this and sold those trucks anyhow. Contact local lemon law lawyers, usually they know about the class actions plus warranty issues and failure to perform. Good luck

This is why I ordered a new mgu for my 24, even though my mgu is working fine.
I have no intention of parking a $75k truck for up to 3 months while I wait for an mgu if I need one. Not happening.

It's inexcusable that Mopar has been backordered on this part for so long. Are they made in Bulgaria?

And they are about to do it again with the Hemi return.

Can you drive the truck? I would leave it at home if I could get it home until the part arrived.
@Farmer Fran
I know U have a 25, no offense meant, wish U all the luck with yer ride.

YUP, I was considering looking at a 2026 when the Hemi comes back out, BUT THEY ARE DUMPING that E Torque junk in there with the MDS, no thank you, so I guess no new 2026 for me. They can keep their DI induction, engine mounted turbo BS 3.0 inline 6's, no thank you either.

Looks like my early built 2019 (Apr 2018) be roosting a lot longer in the driveway unless I decide to go look at Ford and the Coyote 5.0, but who needs a trans that shifts from 10th to 1st, oh no, lol.

Smart thing to do, but OMG, so expensive a preventive maintenance acquirement.

They are $995, but who wants to have their truck out of service for 3 months? Against the price of the truck it's a small price.

I used to run an industrial plant and we had spare motors for everything up to 300 hp electric.

If Stellantis was a well run company, none of this would be necessary. Can always sell it later if they ever become plentiful.

If your ram e- torque is less than 8 years old or has less than 80,000 miles than your MGU (Motor Generator Unit aka Belt Driven Hybrid Starter Generator) IS covered under warranty.

A lot of dealerships think that’s it’s covered under the power terrain warranty, which it’s not. This is because some of their employees don’t realize this is not a traditional alternator. When trying to order this part they have to search under alternators. It took calling my dealership 4 different times asking if it was covered under warranty until they finally told me it was. This was after I went in and showed them their own website. The next Monday after I went in on Saturday their “main” guy called me confirming this part is covered under warranty.

Ram Care was not knowledgeable about anything but the standard warranties as well. However if you are in absolute need of a new MGU Ram Care was helpful there. It took 2 weeks for them to expedite the part to my local dealership despite there being 3500+ back orders. I am still waiting for my new MGU to be installed because how busy my local dealership is.

A week before my MGU finally showed up I decided to fix it myself, after not knowing for sure when my new part would show up and not being able to buy one anywhere else. In my situation it was a bearing in the MGU that went bad. I found the same bearing as used OEM at NAPA for $42 and a few hours of labor. KEEP WHATEVER YOU HAD TO REPLACE AS EVIDENCE.

Per my situation because I HAD to resort to fixing it myself when my scheduled date comes for the warranty work providing my evidence of the faulty bearing I’ll either. 1. Will get the new MGU under warranty work. Or 2. Since I fixed it myself and is now perfectly functional I’ll get compensated for my money spent and hopefully my time… But I shall provide y'all with an update when that time comes. Hope this helps some of you out!

"I’ll get compensated for my money"

Let's hope so, but you've run a risk by repairing it. Two potential problems...

A. Since it's working properly they could say no repair or replacement is needed. Or
B. Although you had good intentions, Ram can easily deny a warranty claim because you worked on or disassembled the part.

Your best bet is don't open your mouth. Don't ask for compensation, because if you do it can easily backfire. Ram and other manufacturers continuously look for any reason to deny a warranty claim and you may be about to give them an easy one.

For what it's worth, my "spare" mgu for my 2024 just shipped. Out the door it was about $1025. (current mgu is ok)

Some might view the purchase as overkill, but I've just read too many horror stories of newish trucks in the shop waiting months for this part.

Like a spare tire, it's a spare mgu. Let's just say, that this forum's posts encouraged me to do it, but that if Stellantis had normal parts availability, it would not have been necessary!

Mine started making noises a few weeks ago. I took it in on the 29th of July and yesterday, August 8th, I got confirmation the dealership got the part. I should have my truck back within two weeks. I think mine got expedited because I called Chrysler directly and had them pay for a rental.

I can't tell you how many times we were told it would be two weeks when the RF hub failed a couple years back. In the end it was almost six months before we got our truck back. I really hope for your sake it's true. And you get your truck back fixed within two weeks. I just wouldn't make plans around that time frame.
