As expected. These will have Fram's new dual density synthetic medias, where the claim is that together, they don't need wire screen support, and filter finer.

Maybe this is what the Fram Rep. meant by dual layer in his email reply to me?
Quite possibly so. The media seems to be synthetic media atleast based on appearance. But one guy on youtube seperates the media from the polyester mesh backing

HEMI VVT 5.7 with MDS uses oil because of cylinder deactivation at RPM increase while in ECO mode but from my experience no more than 1/2 a quart at around 3 months.
If you drive more with the MDS in ECO mode I would suspect you could theoretically use more oil
I use RP 5/20 with a K&N silver.
I have never used any oil on MY 19 5.7L VVT, and when in town, maybe 60% of the time I turn on manual gear change to turn off MDS, but since in town and such a short drive, not matter too much. I run Fram UG XG 10060 with full Mopar 5W 20 synthetic which is rebranded PUP. I found the OEM filter was giving me dry starts near the end of an "oil" cycle. But every engine is a different monster also, but with Filter change eliminated dry starts. Just my experience.

What's the Fram Ultra that corresponds to the larger RP 20-820?? (I know it's probly somewhere back in this thread, but I'm lazy)

Hi. There are 3 Fram Ultra filters that I know of that have the same thread sizing to screw on properly to the 5.7L hemi, along with the properly sized rubber gasket/seal. They are the XG10060, the XG10575 and the XG2. 10060 is the smallest and definitely fits my 2020 1500 w/5.7, the 10575 has same width (diameter) as the 10060 but is taller, and the XG2 is both taller and wider. I don't know for sure if either of the two larger filters will fit my truck. There's not a whole lot of room around the filter.

There is a Fram Ultra XG16 which appears to have almost identical dimensions as the 20-820,but different threads and different gasket size (will NOT work on 5.7L). The RP 10-48 is almost identical to the XG10060 - that one WILL fit my truck also.
Let me know if you find another Fram Ultra that is closer in size to the 20-820.
Thanks.
John

Thanks. I found an XG2 in my garage...turns out that's the filter that I've been using on my Ford 450! So now I also know I can use the RP 20-820 on my Ford as well. Learn sumpthin new everyday!

Does anyone have an opinion on why Ram uses the small (MO-339) size oil filter on the 2500 4x4 trucks? It’s definitely not because of clearance issues. I’m wondering if they use the small filter because it hangs out forward of the normal mounting spot on the end of the oil cooler and they want reduced weight hanging on the end of it. Has anyone had issues with the cooler leaking where it connects to the block or had them break? I’ve used the XG2 and the MO-899 on mine and have plenty of clearance all the way around but I’m still not sure about the weight thing and rough road or terrain.

Also the Wix 57045 (NAPA 7045) is an extended length filter the diameter of the XG 10060 and has a bypass setting of 12-15 lbs. Also available in an XP or Platinum. Same gasket diameter as the smaller filters and 22x1.5 metric inlet. Have used them for years on my 08’ Silverado 4.8L.

Simple logistics and six sigma, one filters used on multiple installations. Makes everything easier for the manufacture.

I am just about ready to do my oil change and can't find a RP 10-48 without paying as much for shipping as I do for the filter (they are hard to find right now). For the 6.4, does the 20-820 fit and seal properly? I see talk in the 5.7, but I get the fire warning when I out my truck data in the fitment pages. I read that the filter is as good as 10-48 just larger capacity, is that correct? Thanks

I’ve run the 10-48, 20-820, and the 20-500 on my 6.4. No issues with figment or leakage with any of them. My personal preference is the 20-500 at this point.

Thank you. Just to get as much information as possible, why is the 500 your favorite?

For me, the 10-48 just felt like it was too small.

The 20-820 is larger, both in diameter and length and it will fit. It was just a little more difficult to get in and out.

The 20-500 is the same diameter as the 10-48, just longer.

Hemiman has a picture up, the 500 is a larger filter like the 20-820, but gives more clearance in case of any "possible" rubbing. Now, this is for the 6.4, for the 5.7 the 20-820 doesnt have any issues.

How did you get the larger diameter 20-820 not to rub on the lower radiator hose?

Presuming you are referring to the 6.4L engine in the heavy duty truck the OP has.

RP 10-48 are impossible to buy at the moment. Even Summit wouldn't ship any to me. I don't think the 20-820 will fit on my RHD 2021/22 classic 5.7, it was hard enough getting the original out and a replacement back in. Once the one 10-48 I have gets used not sure where I'll find another. What is the second choice?

I don’t have any interference with the lower hose when running the 20-820 with the 6.4 in my 2018 Power Wagon.

The only issue I had with it was getting it in and out due to the limited space in that area.

I only prefer the 20-500 over the 20-820 because it’s easier to maneuver in and out.

Interesting. I couldn't feel any clearance between mine, and they even had a chafing sleeve over the hose.

I'm sticking with 20-500 also. Easy in and out!
