This is one of those situations where supposedly the brand new racks have been improved and seem to be pretty reliable (but not cheap). If you plan on hanging onto your truck, it probably makes sense to seek out and bite the bullet on a new Mopar replacement, even if it means waiting a bit. Buying an older used one...might not be a long-term fix.

If you're pretty DIY and mechanically inclined, you could do some de-bugging right away. It might be something simple, like fuses up by the battery, wiring, etc. Those are easy and quick checks you can make. Watch a few Y/T videos. You're not alone. There are a lot of past forum threads on Ram EPS (electronic power steering) racks on this forum worth searching (or Google/Youtube search), which contain other debugging suggestions. Or maybe you've already done those. (??)

Cheers

Pull the inspection cover and check the drive belt, maybe you're lucky and that's your problem.

The cover for the belt is on the pass side.
The cover for the circuit board is on the rear (square cover). They sometimes get water in them.

Swap the fuses up by the battery first (there's a Y/T video on it) before you dig down below. Might be that simple

Just closing loop on my experience with replaceing my EPS. I tried replacing the eps drive belt first. This did not fix my issue. That was fairly easy to do but wound up just being a waste of about $50 and 5 hours of my time. Next step was to find a replacement EPS Rack and Pinon. If you searched for one you know there are no cheap ones to be had. Found one at Buy Auto Parts, very expensive, but a lifetime warranty. Took about 3 hours to switch out. Return the core for a refund. No need to get the computer flashed unless you get a code MIL light. No way to know...just depends on the year and make of the replacement eps. Mine worked great. You do need to get a new front end alignment because you remove the tierod ends. Mine worked great just sucks due to the cost. Water in the eps due to a bad boot clamp caused my failure . tks.

Bummer of a situation. But thank you for sharing your journey and experiences. Did you have to send your old one in as a core? Glad you are back up and running!

I replaced mine at the end of March with a new Mopar unit. Part# 68628858AA is (was at the time) the newest iteration of it, and was plug and play. It's been working perfectly so far. I got mine from MoparPartsGiant for 2 grand. It took about a week to arrive via Fedex.

OP... out of curiousity..did you do any trouble-shooting on your tk's EPS unit? Or are you going by what a mechanic said? Lot of guys have discovered a bad fuse/wire/etc ..corroded wire on the EPS circuit board. Even one that just needed a new belt (internally) not very long ago (not hard to change). Some of those things...if that's your problem don't cost any money to fix.

It might be worth doing a search on this forum on Power Steering and there a bunch of threads of things you can check and look at. Unfortunately don't expect most shop/techs to dig into it ...that's what most guys are finding.

Just thought I'd ask...

Seems like these rack and pinions suck along with the EPS system. Waiting for mine to die under warranty to see if that’s the cause of my steering wheel being a hair off center since new and never being able to have it corrected. It’s like the ‘center feeling’ is a hair to the right.
