Back when I was in the wild for Mobil, popular logging truck was Western Star with dual trailers. They mostly hauled pulp sticks in those days since they'd cut most of the saw logs long ago. With paper going out of business, saw logs are making a slow comeback.

Western Star has higher capacity parts, I was told. We don't run cabovers in the U.S. anymore - they lower the load allowed per U.S. DOT bridge formula. Almost all truck tractors are engine out front here.

International was huge in cabovers, dad had 3 at his workplace.

Not sure if bridge weight load formula changed or loads got heavier to make these go away.
Length laws changed to 70 feet long. Back when I had that truck the law was 55 feet front bumper to end of trailer.

That's why trailers were 40 and 45 feet long, while todays are 53 feet long.

DOT used to set up length checks at scales and rest areas as a money making source, especially Georgia.

I got caught at one in Georgia for 55' 10". $50.00, paid at the justice of the peace. They had two passenger vans hauling drivers back and forth to the jail/justice of the peace office.

This was about 10 AM, and best I can remember, I was #145 in the ledger book that day. No money made there...lol

One driver was ticked, and asked the JP just what would happen if he didn't pay. The JP pointed to the jail cells behind the driver, and told the driver he could rest there until he decided he wanted to pay.

He paid up, and so did I. I had so many things wrong, I wanted to pay and get out of there before the guys at the scale decided to check anything else.

This was in 1976.

Here in Europe they set a cap on total length (61feet/18.75meter) including Semi, up here in the North we don't have that extreme cap, but still cap of total length of ~79feet/24meters for standard Semi that can go on every road

Western Star is now owned by Daimler, and little by little they are being standardized with Freightliner components.

Atlanta is now one of the most entertaining racetracks ever, drafting and one groove causes for endless drama as cars can barely make a pass. Every accident is a slide job gone wrong. The name of todays race, quaker state 400 available at Walmart, lol. I guess Walmart is selling that oil isle and quaker state I'm sure got a discount or some funds from wallys. Two birds one stone now even in race titles.

I encourage those with an 8 speed to change their fluid before the 60k ZF recommends. I changed the fluid in my wife's Jeep GC. 38000 miles on this fluid, 0 towing, 0 hauling, just several road trips and my wife's commute to work and back daily.

Up on jack stands. Without a frame this was not fun to get on jack stands.

New fluid for comparison

Got about 4.25 qts out of it and only have about 1.75qts back in before with it just running in park before I went in last night. Now if I can just get the last 2.5 qts back in after doing the fill procedure I'll be in good shape.

Thanks to @Wild one for posting the fill procedure for the 8 speeds.

If I can't get the whole 4.25qts back after doing the fluid check procedure, I'm going to tilt on it the drivers side which will hopefully drop the fluid from the fill plug enough to get it all back in.

Wish me luck guys

I believe this is the first time I've read about anyone having an issue
completing a fluid change in the 8-speed when following the WildOne/ZF
directions.
I hope all goes well and you complete the change-over, and hopefully without
having to tilt anything. That would worry me.

I just got 4.5 qts in it following Ricks sheet. It was completely dark out and I was just too tired to do it last night.

So I got 4.25 qts out and put 4.5 back in. Should be right because I'm sure the filter soaks up a good amount and I spilled some too...

Thanks again @Wild one !

That's about right for the Jeeps version of the transmission.I haven't done one,but i've heard a few guys say the Jeeps take about a quart less then the trucks take. Can you post a pic of your old pan Hemi, i'm guessing it uses a physcally smaller pan,to gain a bit more ground clearance

Yeah everywhere i read about doing this on a Jeep GC said about 4.5 quarts so i should be good.

Here's a couple pics of the old pan. New one is the same PN but a B at the end and no drain plug so that will be fun next time. I'm thinking of drilling a small hole in the an where the filter is when I go to change it next time.

The pan does look differant,as it doesn't have a dropped sump, like the truck pans have
