Airbags or better springs?

Not trying to derail the thread but it kinda fits with the topic - I will probably never tow anything with my truck, but I do occasionally carry decently heavy loads.

Am I nuts for even thinking about Timbergrove bags instead of just going with AirLift 1000s? Just to keep the truck from sagging, really. Didnt want to go springs because I didnt want a rougher unloaded ride.

I have had the airlift 1000’s since about 2012. I am replacing for the 3rd time under warranty. They get cold and crack here in ND.

I also have the tuff truck coils that are progressive rate like the 5th gen ones are.

These work really well.

Nope not at all, the air bags are for heavy weight wether its in the bed or hooked the the hitch.
Timber Grove air bags are one of the best ones out, no cutting and simple install.

I would recommend the tuftruck 1223V variable rate springs. Seems the new 5th gens already have basically the same thing. You will still get some slight sag but variable rate prevents it from getting to bad, for most loads, if you need to reduce sag, after getting springs, then go with air bags. Vraiable rate springs keep OEM smooth ride. reason there is some sag nder lighter loads.

Chris if you are not towing anything then the in coil bags will work fine and are the cheapest solution. I tow and sometimes heavy for a 1/2 ton so I prefer heavier rubber better design axle to frame bags to supplement my WDH and the 1223V are a good solution as well but both are more money and not necessary for your stated goals.

I installed heavier springs and it does a BIT better, but I really should have gone with the progressive ones.

Update, I installed the Airlift Wireless One last night. Took about two hours. I don't yet have the airbags (they arrive this week), so I haven't made the final connection to the fuse box, but the rest is ran.

Just my 2 cents - I'm towing a 5600 lb travel trailer frequently, about 650 pounds of tongue weight, but we manage to use pretty much all of our 1350 ponds of payload capacity (maybe a pinch over occasionally).

Within a few weeks of owning the truck I ordered some 1211 springs and some airlift 1000's - I knew going in that the stock springs were great for hauling around some milk bread and eggs - but not much else.

The truck works so well with the 1211 springs that I never installed the Airlift's - they are going out at the next garage sale. I know some really like their air bags, I have had Airsprings on other trucks - and they help for sure, just not a huge fan.

A weight distribution hitch would solve all your problems

I think if you are going to haul the occasional heavy load the AL 1000's in coil springs would be fine. I just installed my Timber Groves last night and have a little over 10psi in the bags, and it is a noticeable ride difference (stiffened it up). They recommend 7psi if you are running unloaded or not towing anything. I think for little bit extra work it takes to install the Timber Groves (if you have a friend in a shop with a lift it will be much more better), it is worth it over the in coil air springs. Just my 0.02 cents.

Hi all,

Have any of you installed new springs after having the 4" Mopar lift kit installed? I'm at 50k hard miles on my 2016 and looking for the best option. I'm about to put the Hellwig sway bar on, but it needs new rear springs. Ive contacted TufTruck and waiting for their reply.

Thanks!

So I talked with TufTruck, none of their springs are designed for a 4" lift, but they were helpful and sent me measurements to compare to stock. They can't say it will work for sure, but said if I chose to get their brand to go with their extra HD springs, the TTC-1223. This is not a variable rate spring. I heavily load my bed often so not opposed to trying them.

Anyone running these?

Thanks

SO you have a 4 inch lift already? Timber Groove has 4 inch lift air assist spring kits and I believe they make a coil replacement sir spring. https://timbergroveenterprises.com/shop/09-16-ram-1500-4-lift-rear-axle

Might give them a call. They could tell you better than I could. I like their rear air spring assist mounts.

just for fun, i used the T fitting for the hoses, and ran my schrader fitting into my gas cap area. i love it here, no bending around the bumper with the trailer on like my last kit.
This is brilliant.

I ran my air fill line through the license plate hole. Had to trim off a little bit of plastic on the back side of the bumper. Opened up the hole with a slightly larger drill bit to fit the line through.

I haul a 6x12 daily 2-5k in it..I put the airlift 1000 in and it took the sag away..quick easy cheap. Held up 3 years so far. I didn't get the compressor or anything...I had planned on it but I ended up filling them to 30 and forgot about em. They did stiffen the ride a smidge and will raise the rear an inch or 2 unloaded.
