I have a 2014 1500 and sent RamCares a message with my VIN# to see if my truck was affected by this and all though I do have 2 open recalls this issue was not one of them.

The software mod won't prevent the short circuit, but it WILL modify how the system works so that it automatically cancels any call for torque from cruise control.

It sounds like right now if cruise is set and the short circuit occurs, the PCM sticks with the cruise speed setting with no way to turn it off.

Great to have knowledgeable people on this forum that help us understand

I heard this was discovered as a result of a rodent chewing through some wires. The wires eventually shorted in a way that caused the CAN bus to go down, but nothing else. The cruise control was active at the time and there was no way to shut it off short of turning the ignition off (I think). So the change will likely be in the cruise control module where if the bus goes down it will disable/turn off the cruise control.

Very good detail and explanation as to the issue and how it was found, here:

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2018/RMISC-18V332-9025.pdf

This is what looks to be the explanation we'll be getting in the mail:

"The fault handling strategy of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software on your vehicle [1] does not remove positive torque requests from the engine controller if the CAN-C bus stops communicating while the cruise control is requesting positive torque. In the extremely rare instance of a short in the vehicle causing the CAN-C bus to stop communicating while the cruise control is active and the vehicle speed is below the set speed such that the cruise control system is requesting positive torque at the exact moment of the short, it is possible for a positive torque request to be locked on the PCM which may result in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating."

So does this issue only occur on vehicles with the "Gnawing Rodent" Package installed?

hmmm, mine says it doesn't have a recall. Guess it is not all 1500?

Actually, the recall calls for insertion of a can of Rat-Be-Gone around the wire harness!

My local dealership service department noted that the recall is on the Journey's right now.

My '16 Ram is now showing recall available in the Mopar.com portal, but my '17 Scat Pack still isn't showing. I've talked to some people with the opposite situation ('17 Challenger w/392 A8 showing, but nothing for their Ram or other FCA vehicles) so I suspect the updated calibrations have been completed and it's just down to publishing availability for all of the affected VIN's.
