W250 step side air pump question

I just got this 1985 w250 step side. I’m redoing fuel and bake lines. Is the air pump necessary? Mine is locked up and don’t want to buy a new one if not necessary.

I've removed 2 now - and 89 and '90. Use some extra washers behinds the water pump bolts to make up for the brackets you take off. I connected the left and right air pipe plumbing together to prevent exhaust from coming out.
