Can some one verify where the PCV valve is in a 5.7 L 5th gen ? I think I see it in one of two parallel hoses that run to right of engine but can't get it out. I'm burning oil every 1600 miles and my dealer says this is within allowable usage !

It's on the pass side of the intake towards the back of the intake manifold, basically kitty corner from your oil fill.If it's never been out, good chance you'll have to grab the ears with pliars to twist it out. Doesn't hurt to pay attention to the way it faces when you remove it,so you reinstall it,with the hole in the side facing the same way as your original, although i'm not sure it really makes any differance which way the hole faces.

Oil catch cans don't fare well during smog inspections.
Here on the east coast we don't have "smog" inspections,
but we do have Emissions inspections. I'm thinking of taking
it out just prior. I saved the original PCV line for just that issue.

CA is very liberal for what it considers under the emissions umbrella. If it's in the return line of just about anything under the hood they will inspect to make sure it's OEM or you fail.

How does catch can affect emissions testing ? Thanks

I doubt it has any effect on anything they can measure. It would have to be seen.
My best guess is that ANY modifications to the emissions is illegal, but I don't know for sure.

Visual inspection is always the killer. Still not as bad as my diesel days where the tech would spend 15 minutes under the hood with a flashlight that would give you sunburn just looking for something to fail you.

CARB (California Air Resource Board - the smog czar for CA) sends moles in as regular customers to see if a shop is maintaining standards. If a tech is lenient then that goes in their (and the shop's) permanent record. Too many and the tech will need to find another line of work and the shop could get closed down so they are always on their toes and err on the side of caution not knowing if you are a CARB "undercover agent".

CA has started going after companies that sell stuff that knowingly defeats required systems as there is no misinterpretation as to what that product does. That's why a lot of aftermarket companies won't sell to people in CA any more.

It's completely fine and will not effect anything as it is in line and not eliminating a thing plus they won't even pay attention or be looking for it.

I just assumed I would get caught up by making any modification.

I'm due this year again in October. Maybe I'll leave it in and find out.
I get that it's not the same as the type with the little air filter, but
when legislators and/or bureaucrats get busy with their little poison
pens they never sweat the small stuff.

If I learn anything one way or the other I'll post it. Pennsylvania
already seems weird to me because I believe the laws vary from
one county to the next. Some don't require inspections at all, so I
have heard.

We offer UPR catch cans and they will keep you from having to clean or replace your PCV as often. I use a UPR catch can on my car and have used them on several trucks in the past, it is well worth the investment!
