It should have no issues running on 87 octane gasoline. Definitely something is off with your engine. Unfortunately the knock sensors are buried in the valley of the 3.6 under the oil cooler housing. A huge PITA to get to! Possibly the reason the dealer said “it’s normal”. Please do try a different dealer.
Thanks taking it to another dealer in town.

Just drove my 24 warlock classic, 648 miles today in 86 degree weather . Shell 89 with ethanol, no issues. Course I have the 5.7 non e torque hemi

PS gas mileage on a non seasoned engine with less than 5 k was 17.5 at 80 mph and 18 at 72 mph. Hand calculated. This is with 2 adults, 1 child, dog, luggage, coolers. topper and about 600 extra lbs of crap my wife bought on holiday.

Very pleased with gas mileage and all around power.

Op hope you solve your problem. I've got 4 rams. Three require 91 or better while this new one so far is 89.

Maybe see if you could find some non ethanol gas, say buckys blue pump non ethanol. Could be a bad mixture or just bad luck.

My 3.6 runs very fine on 87 octane, but always on top tier gas. I'm wondering if maybe you have only run your truck on short hops and don't get it out on the highway much. Maybe it just needs a good cleanout run at 70mph for a while..? Perhaps a can of injector cleaner too.

Yup it’s the 3.6.
Coming from a background of over 70) 3.6 Pentastars in a service fleet with +/- 12M miles, I can tell you with confidence that base old 87 octane fuel is fine. 85% ethanol, while not as efficient, is fine as well. There is zero reason to run a higher octane fuel in these engines. It's possible you purchased deteriorated/old/stale fuel or fuel that had water contamination (phase issues with ethanol blend, etc.). If it persists with a different fuel from a different retailer (buying a different fuel brand, not buying the same fuel from a different site within a chain of stores), there is an issue with the engine/truck.

He has 500 miles on the thing. What he needs is to get the knock fixed before it wrecks the engine. Running it hard just makes that worse.

He has tried different brands, stations and even running 93 octane. It still knocks, the vehicle has a problem, it should run fine on 87.

Through The years ram has used the same spark plugs. This is in regarding to the 5.7 l hemi compression has went from around 9 and 1/2 to 10 and 1/2. So some newer model hemis may need a slightly colder spark plug to stop this detonation. I have read into this extensively and that is my conclusion. Mine does the same thing around 3000 RPM under acceleration the only difference in spark plugs one is tapered one has a seat but they're all the same heat range. Most of the spark plugs are projected tip and I believe this is what is causing detonation

Its also possible, especially if getting fuel from the same station, that the fuel is not at 87, but something lower.

I've tried all the fuels. Replaced my knock sensors too. It still does it. It doesn't do it when the engine is cool but once it's up to operating temperature I get detonation

I have no experience with that motor, But it is still under werrenty, so don't take any " it's OK"
B.S. from the dealer.
Get after it now, not later.
I just run reg. gas most of the time. 87 i have put a odd tank full of 91 when real cold, never noticed any difference.

You will see the effect of higher Octane when it is really hot, far more than cold.

I just dumped over 1/2 a tank of 93 in mine on Sunday prior to hurricane hitting TX. I normally run 89. I wanted to wait till I got it down under a 1/4, BUT with the hurricane coming and the forecasts were all over the place, I did not want to chance truck not having a full tank of fuel, so I strolled into the Shell and filled it up with that $3.75 a gallon 93 Octane, lol.

Well Dean2, "5K miles" looks like 5,000 miles to me and it should be broken in by now. Do you really think running it at 70mph for a while is "running it hard"? And it's under warranty still, right? Have a nice day.
