for mileage and performance.

For sure, but perhaps not longevity or HD application, as they only have them in the 1500. The verdict isn't out yet, generally the zf8 speed is a great car transmission but who knows about truck. Hard to service, very cheap transmision, and it runs hot. All great for performance and mileage, but something that can be worked hard? Maybe future zf8's will be tougher, dunno.

This is exactly my point here, and the reason why i prefer RFEs over them. I test drove a 3.6L 2013 Laramie Longhorn 1500 with the 8SP before i got my current 1500, and dear god i thought something was broken. Running at 200F is way too hot for a transmission in my opinion. The 8SP is amazing don’t get me wrong, but in truck applications it seems a little strange.

200F is too high for sure unless you're towing or driving through the desert. I believe the optimum operating temp. for the 8Hp70 is like mid 170's or thereabouts.

The 6.4 Hemi has a ZF8 speed in the 2500 and 3500 now. It seems to be getting great reviews from everyone who's bought one so far.
It's putting my mind at ease a bit about getting the 8 speed whenever I get a new 1500.

So is it lugging in a higher gear than normal if you go to accelerate after slowing down?

Yeah sounds like more of a control issue not downshifting quick enough as opposed to a slip.

It's a vastly different transmission then the zf8 in the 1500 so I've heard. I wonder if if people like Ender can mate that new 2500 trans to his 1500 for a replacement, that might be something real good.

It will be interesting to see what the replacement costs will be 1500 zf8 versus 2500+ zf8, and I wonder if they still pre heat fluid for 2500 like they do 1500's, if so that would be a deal breaker for me anyhow.

It feels like that, but its kinda hard to explain. When it occurs it happens for around 5-15 seconds straight, then the RPMs drop a smidge then it shifts into a lower gear. If i punch the gas just a little more, it downshifts into 2nd and shifts normally.

Yeah preheating the tranny fluid just doesn’t seem like a great idea to me.

Agreed, that's one of the reasons I've been kind of wary of the 8 speed in the 1500. I'm pretty sure there won't be much choice in the half tons when I upgrade though so.... it's that or a Ford and right now I'd rather take the risk on the 8 than an F150.

That really sounds like the pcm is not sure what gear to put it in....

Has the connector on the transmission been disconnected recently?

Might want to find someone with either a scantool or Alfaobd to perform a quicklearn on it....

No, it’s never been disconnected for the life of the truck. The only thing i can think of regarding the powertrain is the FCA recall that causes a constant error code from what i’ve read. And yes, it sounds exactly like the PCM doesn’t know what gear to put it in.

Is there any way to reset it?

and is there a fuse for it?

No not that I'm aware of. The quicklearn is the only way I know of to force the pcm to relearn the tolerances in the trans to account for wear in the trans. From what I understand it tests the tolerances in the clutch packs by engaging them repeatedly...

Not sure if that would fix the problem but its definitely worth a try.

I’m gonna have to look at that. The last time i was in the fuse box (why i mentioned it) there was a burned out fuse that didn’t seem to effect anything so i never looked at it fully.

Hey, speaking of anything, Where are the active grill shutters on 2013s? Mine doesn’t have them, but it has a fuse where they go?

I believe the only trucks that got the active grill shutters were the 8 speed Hemis....

Yup only 8 speeds have the shutters. Similar concept to using up inventory with the 2019 classics, but in the same generation by building them without the "enhancements"... No need to make production line changes by not introducing things like shutters.
